With lights all around her.

And after they beat her black and blue.

It was a successful job.

They had placed all the boys in homes that were vetted by one of our contacts in the system. One boy, Aleks, didn’t have any paperwork, so my brother Erik and his wife Ana took him in.

“Size thirteen,” Brax said, bringing me out of my thoughts.

“What size do you need?” the girl, who I now saw was named Misty, asked me next.

This was my first time at the bowling alley, but there was one thing I knew about them that bothered me. “I don’t know how I feel about wearing other people’s shoes,” I told the three of them. Yes, that was right, and I didn’t care if I was acting high maintenance. The last thing I wanted to do was share some unknown person’s footwear.

“Never figured you would be scared of a few germs,” Hunter teased.

“I’m not scared of germs. Feet are just gross.”

“Gentlemen, I think we’ve finally seen her prissy side,” he announced.

“I’ll show you prissy,” I spat back at him.

Brax wrapped his arm around my shoulder and turned me in another direction.

From the corner of my eye, Hunter stepped closer to the counter. “She’s a size ten,” he told Misty.

Next, the other two told the girl their sizes. Once we had all the shoes, Dimitri wrapped his arms around my shoulder, pulling me away from Brax. Then he switched to Russian and said, “You’re on my team tonight, Kisa.”

Hunter stepped up beside us, then leaned in and kissed the junction between my neck and collarbone, whispering, “I think it’s my turn, isn’t it?” I glanced over at the girl at the counter, who was wide-eyed at our exchange, and winked. Colour flushed her cheeks as she hid her face behind her long hair, and busied herself with the shoes on the counter that had been returned.

Brax came up behind us, wrapped his arm around my waist and extracted me from their clutches. He ushered me to the farthest lane, completely disregarding their protests as they trailed behind us. Once we were all set up, he turned to them and said, “Nice way to keep a low profile guys.”

“Just because you’re scared of losing your balls to your feelings doesn’t mean I need to be,” Dimitri replied.

“I won’t stop until Hellcat tells me to,” Hunter agreed.

“Okay guys, let’s get our game on,” I told them, as I grabbed a ball.

“Let me show you how it’s done,” Dimitri whispered in my ear, as he stepped up behind me. The warmth of his body seeped through my clothes. His hand slid up my arm until it was cradling mine, and with it, the glowing ball. It was like he was spooning me in bed, only we were standing. I glanced over at the other guys, who watched us intently.

There wasn’t even a bit of jealousy in their eyes.

Maybe they were serious about the whole sharing thing.

Regardless, the more I thought about it, the more I knew I needed to give this a chance.

“I should have known your aim with a gun would translate to bowling,” Dimitri groaned. “You've seriously never gone bowling?”

“Never had the chance,” I responded.

We didn't do a lot of things like this growing up, but we still had a childhood of sorts. It was mostly hanging out at home and going to the theatre to watch the odd movie. My brother built his house and added enough to it that none of us wanted to spend time anywhere else. Besides, all the Reapers’ children enjoyed being around others like us. None of us had to be concerned about saying the wrong thing in the presence of adults who weren’t from the life.

There was a camaraderie of understanding.
