Archer leaned around me and grabbed a glass. Then he asked, “Who are those guys?”

“A couple of plants,” I responded.

“For who?”

“If I had to guess.” I lowered my head to ensure neither of the guys could read my lips. “They’re from the Crows and they’re probably looking for Dirk.”

By the end of the night, Ralph and I had set a date to meet up the following evening to discuss the removal of some of his baggage.

* * *

The next night, once I found the perfect dress to wear to the restaurant I chose to meet at, I got into one of the escalades parked out back.

Twenty minutes later I was pulling up outside of Alfredo’s.

I stepped forward to hug Ralph, but he evaded me, and said, “I’m sorry, I don’t do hugs. Word might get back to my wife that I’m stepping out on her.”

“I thought you understood that this was supposed to look like a date,” I told him.

“I didn’t know we would be meeting at this place,” he replied. “It’s owned by a friend of her father.”

I barely contained my eye roll. Men who hired me, didn’t care if their wives found out. If they did, it would already be too late.

“Can I sit down?” He nodded, so I took the seat across from him. “Tell me about your wife,” I said.

“If you don’t mind, I’d rather not talk about her,” he told me.

“That’s why we’re here isn’t it? Might as well get it out in the open. How long have you been together?”

“Five years,” he answered.

“When is she due?”

“Three months,” he responded, clearing the frog from his voice. “Should we talk about cost now?”

“Slow down, what exactly are we negotiating? I want to hear you say what you want.”

“To have her killed.”

“Let me see your wedding band.” I reached over and touched the ring. “Take it off.”

“Why?”

“As a sign of your commitment.” He passed me the ring. I examined it, and the band looked like it hadn’t been worn for longer than a day. I tossed it back at him. “This thing is brand new. Why are we really here?”

“I wanted to see how easy it would be to get you alone.”

“You guys are good. Do you know why I’m so good at my job?”

He furrowed his brows in confusion. “Why?”

“It’s because I think through every possible scenario and plan accordingly.” I sat back in my chair. “I didn’t walk into your trap. You and your men walked into mine.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“You can stop lying to me now.”

“I’m not lying.”
