“Yes, of course. I remember the dinner,” I reassured her, even though I was panicking on the inside. I had no one to show up with.

“Perfect,” my mother said delightedly. “By the way, you never told me your girlfriend’s name. Or maybe I missed it. What was it again?”

“Kathy,” I blurted out in a state of panic. It was the first name that came to my mind.

“What a lovely name,” my mom said, oblivious to everything that was going on in my brain. “Well, I look forward to seeing you and Kathy tomorrow.”

“Okay…”

As I hung up the phone, I slapped my palm against my forehead. I had gotten myself into a real predicament. Not only had I told my mother about a fake girlfriend I didn’t have, but I had also given her the name of one of my employees.

But the more I thought about it, the more it made sense to me. Kathy had proven that she could handle high-pressure situations with the presentation today, and handling my mother was no less than that. She would be the perfect candidate for a fake girlfriend.

Now all I needed to do was convince her. After mulling over the plan a little more, I decided to finally bite the bullet and asked my secretary to call her into my office.

“You wanted to see me?” Kathy peered in my office door.

“Yes, please take a seat,” I gestured to the empty chair in front of my desk.

She nodded. I couldn’t help but notice how different Kathy looked since the last time I had seen her. Maybe she had done something to her hair but whatever it was, it was really working for her.

“I hope I’m not in trouble,” she let out a nervous laugh.

“No, of course not,” I reassured her. “I just wanted to congratulate you on the amazing presentation today. Everyone thought you did a really great job and I do, too.”

A genuine smile spread out on her lips.

“That means a lot coming from you,” she said, meeting my gaze.

For a moment, it felt as though a surge of electricity passed between us through one look alone. God, she was beautiful. And there was no doubt about the chemistry we shared that night when I met her in the bar. I shook my head abruptly. Now wasn’t the time.

“I think hiring you for this position has been one of the best decisions this company has made in a while,” I told her earnestly.

“Well, it’s been worth it for me as well,” she replied.

There was a brief moment of silence between us. But it wasn’t awkward. Instead, we were looking into each other’s eyes again. But Kathy cut the moment short and coughed loudly, which transported me back to reality.

“Kathy,” I started, knitting my fingers together in front of me. “You did such a great job today that it made me realize… I could really use your help on another project.”

“Another project?” Her eyes lit up with curiosity. “Of course, I’d love to know more about it.”

“It’s actually…” I hesitated before continuing. “It’s more of a personal project.”

“Oh,” she replied, and I could see the confusion settle on her delicate features.

“Kathy, have you ever had to deal with an overbearing parent?” I asked, throwing my head in my hands.

To my surprise, she seemed amused by my theatrics.

“Not particularly,” she giggled. “But I’ve seen friends who went through that phase and it doesn’t look like the best thing ever.”

“Good. So you at least have some idea,” I said, and then observed her expression carefully before continuing. “I need your help dealing with an overbearing mother who is far too invested in my love life.”

“What do you want me to do?” Kathy said, leaning over to me. Her tone was soft and comforting.

“I need you to go with me to my parents’ house for the weekend and pretend you’re my significant other,” I blurted out.

Kathy froze in her seat. “You need me to do… what?”
