“Have you not had to do that before? I am sure you must have some nephews or nieces, maybe little cousins,” she paused for a moment and then a mischievous smile lined her lips. “Secret mistress of yours that accidently got pregnant.”

“God forbid that,” I laughed, shaking my head at her suggestion. In all my years of sleeping with different women, I had never once been involved with someone who could be considered a ‘secret mistress’. I was more of a relationship guy, but I just hadn’t wanted to date someone for too many years now.

Someone I could start a family with.

It wasn’t like I had never thought about having children. Now that I was well over in my forties, it was something I did find myself thinking about a lot. What was the point of having all this wealth if I didn’t have someone to leave it to? Someone to carry on my legacy and last name when I’m gone one day…

“Have you ever thought about having kids in your life?” Kathy questioned me, as if she had read my mind.

“I have,” I replied sincerely. “But I’m a bit old-fashioned.”

That piqued her curiosity. “What do you mean?” she asked, propping her chin under her hands.

“I think the only way I’d be willing to bring children into this world is if I get married,” I explained.

“You’re right. That is old-fashioned,” she laughed. “Not many people seem to think that way anymore.”

“It’s just an opinion I have,” I shrugged. “I think children should only be brought into loving homes and they shouldn’t feel confused about the status of their parents’ relationship.”

“I know what you mean,” Kathy nodded. “I know Sarah is a single mother and it gets really hard for her sometimes.”

“Yeah, I can only imagine.” I replied. “I would never be able to forgive myself if I ever abandoned or neglected my family.”

“I hope you find one,” Kathy said, her gaze lingering on my face for a long moment.

“Right now, all I have is a fake girlfriend and her friend’s kid in my living room,” I laughed, hoping to lighten up the topic. “So, a family is a bit out of reach at the moment.”

“You never know,” Kathy said cryptically. “Life is full of surprises.”

The rest of the evening was spent hanging out with Caleb. By the end of it, he and I had become buddies.

“Kathy, I like your boyfriend,” he giggled as we said goodbye to him at the door when the night was over.

“Oh, he says the wildest things,” Sarah, his mother, laughed awkwardly as she took Caleb with him. “But thank you so much to the both of you for taking care of my son tonight.”

“Don’t mention it,” Kathy smiled.

With Caleb now gone, Kathy and I finally had a moment to ourselves.

The atmosphere changed immediately. I didn’t know what it was about her, but whenever we found ourselves alone in a room together, I was inexplicably drawn to her. I wanted so badly to reach out and pull her in my arms, but I had to resist.

“My mom said she should be arriving early tomorrow,” I said, stuffing my hands in the pocket of my jeans in an attempt to look composed.

The truth was, I was anything but. I wanted to continue what we had been trying to do before we were interrupted by the phone call.

“I should probably head to bed now,” Kathy said, stroking the side of her arm. “We don’t need to share a room tonight, do we?”

“We can,” I said, moving closer to her. “I think it would be good practice since we have to make my mom think we live together.”

She raised her eyebrow at me. “I’m not sure. I mean…”

I brought one of my fingers to Kathy’s seductive lips before she could say another word.

“You’re thinking too much,” I lowered my voice down to a whisper. “How about you relax for a bit?”

“Dylan,” she looked up at me with a searching expression. I knew she wanted answers to questions that I wasn’t ready to give just yet.

“Follow me,” I took her hand and led her down to my bedroom. I didn’t want to pressure her into doing anything, but I also couldn’t deny that I really wanted to be close to her right now.
