“I think it’s time for you to leave.” I glared at Kevin.

Chapter 24

Kathy

Reflecting on all the dubious choices I had made over the years, going on a date with a guy like Kevin topped the list. And yet, here I was, sitting across the table from him on what was supposed to be a ‘romantic dinner’.

I admit, I wasn’t too excited to be here. When I kissed him, it felt like I had been kissing a piece of cardboard. He froze up immediately, and when he did kiss me back, he left a slobbery trail of saliva all over my mouth.

Zero out of ten.

But I couldn’t just back out of a date with him now. I did not want to. I wanted to prove something to Dylan. Ihadto show him that I wasn’t just going to be around him forever. And if I had to kiss a couple of frogs along the way, then so be it.

“Let me order for you,” Kevin grinned. “I take all my dates to this restaurant. The owners know me by name.”

How special.

“Do I not get to pick for myself?” I asked.

“Trust me, you will love what I’m about to order for you,” he winked.

I knew that he was trying to assert himself around me, but there was something so artificial and clumsy about it that it just made me want to laugh. I found myself drawing comparisons to Dylan, who had a knack for being the natural leader in any social setting without even trying.

“Are you sure?” I said, holding onto my menu. “What if my taste is completely different than yours?”

Kevin was stumped.

“Hmm, I guess you’ll have to see what I like then,” he winked at me again, grinning ear to ear.

But then, the grin on his face suddenly faded and I saw him looking at something behind my shoulder. Curiously, I turned around to see what he was staring at.

“Dylan? What are you doing here?” I thought I had seen his ghost.

Was I seeing things?

“I think it’s time for you to leave,” he said firmly, before coming over to stand behind my chair.

Even though Kevin stood up looking directly at him, Dylan’s attention was solely focused on me. There was a look in his eyes that I had never seen before. He looked like a wild animal ready to make its kill and shed some blood. His jaw clenched and he seemed mad.

“Dylan, we are not in the office right now,” Kevin butted into the conversation, laughing nervously. “You cannot just order us around like that.”

“I am not speaking to you,” Dylan shot daggers at Kevin, causing him to sink back a little in his seat. “Kathy, let’s go.”

The way he said it, there was no room for negotiation. Awkwardly, I dropped the menu onto the table and reached for my purse.

“No, she’s not going anywhere,” Kevin got up from his side of the table. “Dylan, she’s with me.”

“Think twice before saying something like that again,” Dylan’s tone was threatening. “She belongs to me.”

Listening to Dylan talk about me in such a possessive manner sent a wave of excitement down my spine. Suddenly, I had no interest in being on this date with Kevin anymore. But Kevin was not backing down. He squared up to Dylan, even though he looked ridiculous considering Dylan was taller and more robust than him.

For a moment, it felt like the two men were going to break into a fight from the way they were glaring at each other in heavy silence.

“Hey,” I stepped in between the two of them. “There’s no need for any of this. Kevin, listen, I’m sorry. But I need to leave.”

Dylan wrapped an arm around my waist, holding me tightly.

“Let’s go,” he said.
