Maddie met his gaze for a hot second, and then she slid her hands between their bodies and grasped the hem of her jersey dress, pulling it up and over her head. Her bra followed, whispering to the floor, instantly forgotten.

She was a goddess on a faded gray couch. Her silky fall of raven hair haloed a beautiful face crowned with a mouth made for sin.

As she looked at him through almond-shaped eyes half-closed with desire, he thought he’d never had a more perfect moment.

Or a more perfect woman.

His heart beat hard in his chest, and he felt uncharacteristically, fearfully, sentimental.

He’d had relationships, of course. But his career hadn’t really allowed for permanence and he hadn’t minded that. His partners had been aware, happy with brief relationships themselves.

When he’d decided not to re-enlist but instead to stay and help out his family, it’d crossed his mind that maybe he should settle down.Try to find the right woman.

He hadn’t expected her to be sleeping at Louisville airport, all silky hair, sad eyes, and gorgeous.

She’d be leaving soon.A plane would take her thousands of miles away.

She wouldn’t be here to laugh with, touch, hold.

His eyes burned, and he swallowed as the rush of something that felt a hell of a lot likelovereared its head in his chest.

“Maddie, I—"

She pressed a gentle hand to his lips.“No talking. No thinking.Just….This.”

He could see her point. They’d have plenty of time for melancholy when she was on the other side of the ocean.

“Yes, ma’am.”

He captured her mouth again, delighting in the sweet taste of her, and how easily she gave to him, how easily those walls dropped down.He wanted to sink into her and never, ever come up for air.

They had tonight, and he would make it enough, even if he only had his memories and his right hand forever after.

Maddie locked her arms around his neck and shifted to wrap her legs around his hips.Fuck, he wished he could think away the layers of denim and cotton between him and paradise right now.But he’d said he wanted to take his time, and so he would. He was a man of his word, after all.

He moved down her body, as much as the couch would allow, taking time to worship her amazing breasts. She pressed into his mouth, letting out that breathy moan he’d never get enough of, even if he lived be to a hundred.

No—On second thought, thatwas the sound he’d never tire of hearing. His name falling from her lips like a prayer.

He lifted his head, and she met his eyes.“As sure as I’d like to have you on this couch, and anywhere-the-fuck-else you’ll have me, this time, the first time… I want you to be comfortable.I’m gonna takea long timeover this. We’re gonna need a bed.”

She nodded.

Needing no more encouragement, he stood and scooped her into her arms, delighting in her little gasp.

She curled up into him, and he swore he felt a crack across his heart.

This woman, who baked like a dream, who had a heart as big as her country, who made him laugh until his sides hurt, would be the end of him.

I don’t want her to go.

I want her, even if that means long-distance calls and long flights.

Even if it means months apart.

The realization should have rocked him, but it didn’t.

He’d known from the beginning that she was special.
