It was a hell of a shame that I’d never find out if he tasted just as good as the fudgy treats.Or even better.

I’d bet on the latter.

“You need a rule refresher?”Rick asked as he gently eased the triangle shaper off the balls.

“You take turns to try to hit the balls into the pockets.Did I miss anything?”I asked, knowing I was being cheeky, but it was entertaining to poke the bear.

“All right, well, smartass, there’s alittlemore to it than that.”He pulled another coin from his pocket and offered it to me.“Flip for who goes first?”

The quarter was shiny and newly pressed, and warm in my palm from being near his body.I wanted to hug it to myself like a schoolgirl with a photo of her crush.

“Heads or tails?”I asked.

“Tails.”

“Really?”

“Yup.”He tugged down the left side of his shirt collar just enough to ease his shoulder out.His skin was that gorgeous golden tan all over, I learned, and then I saw the beautifully realised art of an eagle clutching a ribbon in its beak, its wings spread, the US flag billowing around it.“Always feels wrong to bet against the eagle.”

“Wow.Did it take long?”

He let the shirt settle back in place, and I selfishly mourned the lack of ogling I could now do.Still, at least the image was burned into my brain.“Four hours, two sittings.Got it done the same time as some of my unit buddies.”

“Do you— no, never mind.”

“Do I what?”

I’d been about to ask whether he had any more tattoos, other than the one under his ribs and on his forearm, which I had yet to see in real detail.

But then I’d have to admit I’d been staring on Sunday.Andthenhe’d know that I wanted to explore every inch of his skin with my fingers and then my mouth.

And I did.Fuck, I did.

I really did want to.

I might have very recently broken it off with my fiancé, but I had eyes. And those eyes, and the rest of me, were deep in lust.“Nothing.”

The corner of his mouth turned up, and his eyes danced with mischief, but he shrugged.“All right, then.Keep your secrets.”

“Oh, my God.Was that aLord of Ringsreference?”I laughed, even more drawn in by him.First John Wyndham and now Tolkien? He was a puzzle of a man, and the more I learned, the more I wanted to know.

“You know it was.Read the whole trilogy one tour,” he confirmed. Was that a pink flush creeping up his neck?It wasadorable.“C’mon.Put me out of my misery and flip that coin.”

“This isn’t over, Callahan,” I muttered, but I flipped it.

The eagle looked up at me when the coin landed.

Rick

Rick’s attention was slowly becoming centered wholly on the beautiful woman opposite him.He was trying to keep an eye on the beanie-wearing guy chatting up his little sister, but Maddie Liu was one hell of a distraction.

Her silky, raven hair framed a face created by angels. Her slight overbite made her rosy mouth more interesting, drawing attention to her top lip.It looked very soft. He’d have loved to find out just how soft.

He made himself think of Jess’s reminder to look out for her cousin.

He didn’t think sleeping with her would be included in that remit.Sadly.
