The sultry tone of her voice went straight to Rick’s cock, and he stifled a groan.

Hoisting Toby up, he told the kid, “Okay. She asked for it.”

“Horsie, ick,” Toby commanded.

“Okay, but you gotta hold on tight.”Rick sat Toby down on the hardwood floor and his nephew clapped his chubby little hands with unbridled delight. He waited patiently for Rick to lie face down and then clambered on top of him, settling on his waist and grabbing handfuls of his t-shirt.

“You holding on?”

“Yes, ick!”

Maddie chuckled.

“All right, buddy, horse is ready.”Rick slowly got to his hands and knees and lumbered along the floor at a glacial pace.Toby screamed joyfully with every inch of the floor covered.

Rick’s heart warmed every time he got to do this with Toby.Sure, it was hell on his knees, but whatever. He’d take the ache a thousand times over for hearing his nephew’s little squeals of happiness.

“Gidd-up!”Toby cried.“Gidd-up!Fasta!”

“Yeah, yeah, this horse is old.Last one left in the stable.”

“Is that so?You look pretty decent for an old nag,” Maddie commented.

Rick tried hard not to preen.“Know a lot about riding horses, do you?”

“At the moment, I’d quite like to.”

Heat rushed through him at her words. They were absolutely flirting now.

The question was, did he want to stop at just flirting?

Did she?

Rick had to remind himself that Maddie lived on another continent and was taking this time to get over her break-up, which he was very curious about.

He was about to shoot something pithy and clever back when Jenny appeared in the doorway, looking rested and glowing.“I needed that bath.Could’ve stayed soaking in there forever.”She scooped Toby off Rick’s back.“Thanks, guys.”

Maddie took another drink of her coffee and then set it down.“Thanks for the coffee, and the company, but I’ve got a socials video to shoot before dinner.I’d better get going.”

Rick stood up.“I’ll see you out.”

“There’s no need.”

“Let him,” Jenny said fondly.“Southern boys break out in hives if they don’t exercise their good manners on a regular basis.”

“Thanks, Jen,” Rick snarked back.

“No problem, bro.”

He walked Maddie to the door, where she slipped her shoes back on, and then he reached around her to open the door.

“See you for dinner? We still on for that?”

“It’s a date.”Her hand flew to her mouth.“I mean, you know.Sorry.I have to stop saying that.Afrienddate.”

He tried to suppress a smile.“I thought we decided this was all theoretical anyway, didn’t we?Theoretically, if it was a date…”

“...Which it isn’t.”Her gaze held his for a moment, and Rick wanted nothing more than to claim her lips in a soft kiss, taste the hint of coffee he knew would linger on her tongue.
