“You got it.”He bent to the task and Jenny exercised superhuman restraint in not gazing dreamily at him like a horny teenager.Like the horny teenager she apparently still was inside.

“How’d you take your coffee?”

“One sugar,” he replied as he moved the dial.“What else?”

The coffee machine sputtered into life as Jenny took out sky-blue mugs from the cupboard above the counter.“Um, could you switch on the fridges out front? Then they’ll be ready to put the sandwich fillings right in.The switches are at about knee level on each fridge.”

“Yes, ma’am.”He crossed into the shop space, and Jenny took a deep breath.

She hadn’t felt this way about a man since Dustin, and look how that had turned out.

She sternly reminded herself that she did not need a man in her life right now, that Toby was the only male for whom she had time.

If only her libido also believed that.

“All done,” Levi announced as he appeared back in the doorway.“That coffee smells like ambrosia.”

“It’s ready.”Jenny offered a cup.“Here you go.”

"Thank you."A grin tugged at the corner of his mouth.“You run on coffee, too?”

“Along with most of America.”

He toasted her with the mug.“Amen to that.”He leaned back against the counter, his expression hard to read under the ballcap.

“Tell me about this cat.Have you named him?”

”It’d be stupid to do that. He’s only been comin’ around a week or so.”

Jenny hid her smile behind her mug.“You have, though.”

"Might have," he muttered.

He was adorable. Why did he have to be adorable?

She opened the fridge."Does this cat, that you may or may not have named, like milk?I can give you a little bottle."

Levi's face softened. He was even more handsome like this; relaxed."That's kind.Thank you.Reckon he'd appreciate it."

She located a little plastic bottle from the odds and ends piled up in a box by the window and filled it with milk."It's not free. The price is one picture of this cute kitty."

Levi grinned."Mangy is a more accurate word, but sure."He dug in his pocket and held out his smartphone."Put your number in.I’Il text the photo to you."

Jenny hesitated.

“No pressure if you don’t want to,” he added softly, and that made the decision for her.She took his phone and typed her number, and her name.

“There you go.”

Their hands brushed when she returned the phone and she felt the touch all the way down to her toes.

I have it real bad. What am I, twelve?

Levi set his empty mug down on the counter.“I better get goin’.I hope your kid’s doin’ well.Toby, right?”

It touched her that he remembered.Even if he only knew because of the gossip mill that had dogged her when she’d returned to town, like being a single parent now was akin to having plague in the 1600s.

“He’s fine.Thanks.”
