I wanted very badly to tell them to go get served elsewhere, but since Jenny hadn’t given me any information, I couldn’t do anything but behave as normal.

Everything else went great. As I met people and served them—some of whom asked after my mum and dad, which was sweet.

Laurie video-called me at around eleven a.m.

“I can go home today!Thank theLord. There’s a woman next to me who snores to beat the band.I was genuinely considering smothering her with one of her own sweaters.”

Jenny snorted from behind me.

“I’m glad!I bet you’ve missed your own bed.I always do.”

“Oh my, I really have. And, I can come back to work—”

“Oh, no you don’t,” I warned her.“Your arm isliterallybroken.”

“Fractured, technically.I can still work the cash register.”

“Not if you know what’s good for you.”

She scowled.“Sassin’ me, girl? You should respect your elders.”

I bit down on a smile.“Not iftheydon’t respect their own health.”

I had her there.I could feel her bristlingthroughthe screen.“Perhaps I’ll see how I feel tomorrow,” she finally said, a bit of fight still firm in her tone.

I wouldn’t have expected anything less.

“You do that. You want me to come over this evening?Do you still love the Han’s food when you have takeaway?Shrimp lo mein, extra dipping sauce?”

She sighed.“You remember my vices.Yes, I’d love the company.”

“Good. You can also look over my sketches for this bridal cake.If you behave yourself, I might let you make some of the fondant decorations later in the week.”

“Watch it,” she said fondly.“See you this evening.”

I hung up to see Jenny watching me, amused.

“She pissed?”

“Oh, yeah.”

Jenny chuckled.“She’s a do-er, not a watcher or a waiter, like me.And, like me, she hates to be sidelined.”She turned back to the counter to serve an absolutely adorable pair of teenage girls in matching pink dungarees. As I watched, she served them bottled Coke and thenupsoldthem a warm, salty pretzel each.

She was too good to be real.

As if she’d read my mind, she turned to me, grinning, hands on hips.“I’m doing good, right?”

“You’re doing amazing.”I took advantage of the lull in customers to say, “Your brother asked me to be his date for the wedding.”

Jenny’s eyes went gratifyingly big.“Thewedding?Oh, myGod.What’re you gonna say?”

“Um, I was thinking about saying yes.”

“YEAH!”She threw her hands up in the air and danced around, joy in every muscle.

“I mean, that’s great,” she added sheepishly.“I was hoping he was going to ask you.Do you need something to wear? You have free reign over my wardrobe.I don’t wear my fancy stuff hardlyeveranymore.People tend to give you the side eye if you show up to baby massage groups in cocktail dresses.”

I loved her, I really loved her.
