“We should get him inside. He might have a concussion!”

Rick snorted.“His head seems a little too hard for that.”

But he helped me carry Sebastian into Jess’ house, anyway.

* * *

Seb wasn’t out for long.He protested weakly at being carried into the house and set on the sofa.I dragged his suitcase inside, too.

I fetched a damp cloth from the kitchen, and laid it on his head.

“Unnf,” he said.“Head hurts.”

“You’ll live.”

He closed his eyes.

Rick loomed in the doorway to the living room, arms folded, shoulder butted up against the doorjamb.“Should I stay?”

I glanced over at Seb.Over a fortnight’s distance now made me wonder what I’d seen in him, besides the fact that he’d pursued me, and I’d been too wrapped up in my business to look for red flags.

“I’ll be fine.I’m in no physical danger from him, Rick.”

“Yeah.I get that.”He glowered at the prone man on the sofa.“Holler if you need me.I’m just next door.”

“I will.”I squeezed his bicep.“Still on for tomorrow?”

“Hell, yeah,” he said, gazing down at me, his eyes soft like I’d hung the moon.“Wild horses couldn’t drag me away from you, Maddie.”

I lifted my face for his kiss and he obliged. When we parted, I walked him to the front door, kissed him again, reveling in the feel of his long, broad body against mine.

“See you tomorrow,” I promised.

He smiled against my mouth, kissed me some more, and I sank into him.

I had thought about asking him to stay, but it didn’t feel right with Seb here. And, I couldn’t in good conscience go next door and leave my ex-fiancé in my cousin’s house. With a potential head injury.

I watched Rick walk over to his house, appreciating the line of his shoulders in the suit jacket, and I didn’t bother to resist the urge to sigh girlishly.

When I closed the door, Seb was sitting up.

“How’s the head?”

He shrugged.

“Are you hungry? You flew a long way.”

He speared his hands through his hair.“Food would be nice.”

He scrolled through something on his phone while I made scrambled eggs and tinned corned beef with a side of bread and butter.I made coffee, too. When I set it all down at the tiny table, he came over, sat, and looked at me through sad eyes.

“Thanks.”

I wrapped my hands around the mug.“You’re welcome.”

He started to eat mechanically, then smiled around his fork.“These are really good. You always could find a way to make eggs sort of magic.”

He ate in silence for a little while, while I tried not to think about the fact that I could be naked under Rick right now.
