“What is this?” I tap a finger on the box.

“Dessert.”

How does he know I wanted dessert?

“No, thanks.” Forcing an indifferent note into my voice, I put the box on my lap. “I’m not hungry.”

“Not hungry?” Amusement gleams in his expression. “After that heroic escape attempt? You must be starving.”

“Oh, shut up,” I grumble, eyeing the box. “Is it chocolate?”

“Chocolate mousse layer cake.”

“I’m still not hungry.”

“No reason to let it go to waste.” He extends a hand. “Here, give it to me.”

“You shouldn’t eat while you’re driving.” I open the box, which contains a plastic fork. The rich scent of dark chocolate fills my nose. “I guess I can have a bite or two.”

“I thought you might like it.”

“So you bought me dessert even though you knew I was trying to make a break for it?” I dig the fork into the cake.

“Yeah.” He starts the car.

“How did you know I even wanted dessert?”

“I didn’t.” He grins at me, his eyes crinkling at the corners, and his sudden rakish beauty spreads through me like hot honey. “But I did know I’d catch you.”

ChapterSeven

Dane

You get her yet?

Benny’s text almost vibrates with impatience.

I delete it without responding and stick my phone back into my pocket, watching Hannah through the window of the gas station convenience store. Even from a distance, I see how the fluorescent lights bring out the gold highlights in her hair.

She carries her purchases to the counter and hands them to the cashier along with the twenty I gave her. He says something that makes her smile. A stab of jealousy hits me that some other dickwad gets to be the recipient of her smile.

I don’t even know what the hell my heart is doing. It’s never felt like this before. Hannah was right—there’s no way I’d feel so strongly about an adversary.

So what’s going on? Am I a lion losing his predatory nature? Or has she cast some sort of witch’s spell on me?

And what the fuck am I doing thinking about lions and witches? I live inreality, not some out-there world where fates intervene and stars align and magic happens. In my universe, men don’t fall in love with a photograph and then fall harder when the girl in the photo comes to life.

Hell.Idon’t do that.

Do I?

I need to get a grip.

No. I need to get Hannah Clark out of my system.

I yank the gas pump out of the tank and shove it back into place. As I finish the transaction, she comes out of the store, a plastic bag dangling from her arm.

“You get what you need?” I ask gruffly, stalking around to open the door for her.
