Chapter Thirty-Nine

Madden

Rip. Tear. Lunge. These fuckers stood no chance against my tiger form. In fact, half of them started shaking in their boots before I even approached. I was a predator among these mere mortals, and they knew it. Unfortunately, these mortals had guns, and as more and more of my Shifters were injured, anger brewed in my gut.

How dare these people come into our home and murder us in our sleep. What fucking cowards.

Two men loomed towards me, their guns aimed, and I bared my teeth, growling. I felt two of my wolves flank my sides, and together, the three of us began prowling towards the men. I could already feel the joy their crushed necks beneath my jaws would bring.

Breaking into a sprint, the two wolves followed my lead, and the two Hunters stupidly stood their ground. Taking aim, bullets flew towards us. A yelp came from my right, leaving me flanked by only one other. But I continued, knowing that this wouldn’t be over until one side was dead. I wasn’t going to allow it to be our side.

Bullets continue to spray at us, coming directly into our path, but before I could worry about a bullet connecting with my body, they bounced back, as if an invisible forcefield had stopped them. The two Hunters looked at each other in alarm, beginning to back away, but it was too late. With a large lunge, my jaws clamped around the one man’s throat, while my wolf attacked the other. Within seconds, the two men were no more, and I turned around, searching.

The first thing I noticed was how many more Shifters and Drax were back in the fight, taking down Hunter after Hunter. Clearly, the injured were no longer injured. And then I found her. Standing amongst the battle, light sparking off her in a sphere like shape, her power flowing out of her and to those around us. As I peered around her, I saw the start of the tide shifting in our favor. Bullets bounced off shields, allowing Divines to tear into the Hunters who dared to kill us. With a savage grin, I let out a deafening roar, catching Halley’s attention.

That’s my girl.I thought and a second later, I heard her response.

Go kill some more Hunters for me, will you?

I didn’t need her to ask again. My girl wanted to see some carnage and destruction? I’d gladly deliver.

Running towards more men, I shifted from my tiger into my wolf, letting out an alpha’s howl, calling all my wolves to the area. When the pack fought together, we were unstoppable. I needed all of us.

The steady beat of paws against dirt sounded as the wolves followed my call, heading towards the large mass of Hunters that stood guard against the gates to the school. They weren’t allowing any of us to escape the grounds. They really did come here with the intention to massacre us all.

In sync, my wolves created a circle around the group of Hunters, readying for the attack. The Hunters stood their ground, raising their guns, but I trusted Halley to shield the majority of us. All we needed was one second. One second to lunge and rip their throats out.

Giving the signal, I lunged with each of my wolves, taking Hunters to the ground and tearing at their throats and shoulders. When most of the Hunters were nothing more than meat beneath my paws, I turned towards my wolves, taking in our numbers. It seemed all of us were intact, until a shattering howl broke the air, and I turned to see a black wolf lying on the ground, blood pooling around them. Before I could check in on my pack member, a blur of light was rushing past me, kneeling in front of the wolf.

In that moment I realized two things. One, the blur of light had been Halley. And two, that howl was the sound of a dying wolf.

Chapter Forty

Eli

The chaos didn’t seem to be dwindling as we continued to fight. Knox stood beside me, two brothers in arms, directing me. His eyes were closed, too focused on seeing the immediate attacks, as I used my power to inflict pain on the Hunters. Each Hunter I set my sight on, ended in a heap on the ground, writhing in agony, and begging for an end. Luckily for them, a Shifter or Drax was quick after to deliver that death to them.

I focused as much as I could on tearing down our enemy, but with my power flowing, I couldn’t help but take in all the emotions surrounding us. The pain of the Divines as they were shot, the sadness as they watched their friends die before them, and the fear. The fear permeated the air, choking me with how strong it was from every person on this field. No one wanted to die today. And yet here we were, fighting each other, until inevitably, one side was going to be no more.

Knox continued to utter quick phrases to me, telling me where the Hunters were more likely to take out our kind. Suddenly, his speaking ended, and I looked towards him, my eyebrows drawing together. We were in the middle of a battlefield; he couldn’t just stop.

“Knox?” I urged, feeling towards him, trying to gauge his emotions. All I could feel was despair and, in that moment, I needed to know what he wasseeing.

“Knox.” I yelled louder, gaining his attention. With glossy eyes, still half in his vision, Knox responded to me.

“Find Halley. Now. She needs you.”

Not waiting for any more information, I sprinted towards the bright light at the gate, thankful that Halley’s power was manifesting as a physical entity, allowing me to easily find her among the chaos.

Dodging the fighting, I skidded to my knees beside Halley, where she leaned over a wolf, gently pressing into its fur. After numerous nights spent with Kalani and Halley practicing with our gifts, I immediately recognized the wolf and understood why Knox had sent me here. Feeling out, I was immediately overtaken by immense feelings of pain and grief.

“She’s not healing Eli. I can’t get her to heal, and I don’t know why.” Halley choked out, her voice cracking with each word. Pressing harder, I could see Halley’s power swell, but like she said, nothing happened. After witnessing her heal dozens of other Divines, I knew it wasn’t a lack of her power, but something else.

Closing a hand over her palms, I tried to reason with her. “Halley, this isn’t because of you. There’s nothing you can do.”

Immediately, she ripped her hand away from mine and shrieked. “No, no that’s not true. I can heal her. I can, Eli. I have to.” Her words ended in a sob and even though I promised to never alter her emotions unless training, I couldn’t allow her to break down in the middle of a battle. That was asking for death and I couldn’t lose her. Gathering her pain inside of myself, I allowed her other emotions to take hold, a swell of burning anger consuming her. Anger at the men and women who had done this to her friend.

I saw the change in Halley’s stature as the sadness ebbed away and suddenly, I didn’t recognize the girl in front of me. Anger and hatred permeated her gaze and the white light surrounding her slowly faded into a dark sheen, as if lit up by shadows.
