Mason stiffens and looks at me with raised brows. “You two know each other?”

I bite down on my lip and nod. Carter lets go of her hand and wraps it around her waist instead. He might as well have stabbed me in the heart. I can’t stand seeing him with her.

Mason follows my line of sight and then looks at my face. I must not be hiding my feelings well because his eyes light up with understanding. He turns toward me and gently brushes my hair behind my ear before leaning in.

“Come on, let’s get out of here.”

I hesitate. I’ve never done this before, and even though I like Mason, I don’t like him like that. I barely even know him. I want to be one of those girls that can do one-night stands, but try as I might, I don’t think I can.

“Over my dead body,” Carter says through gritted teeth. He grabs my wrist and pulls me toward him. I stumble and crash into his chest, and he wraps his arms around me. I push against him and glare up at him.

“Why do you seem to think you have a say in this?”

Hurt flashes through Carter’s eyes briefly and hope surges through me. My stupid heart just won’t give up.

“You want to go home with Mason?” he asks, his voice harsh.

I shrug. “Yeah, why not?”

Mason chuckles and hands me another shot of tequila. I down it and look up at Carter with a wicked smile on my face.

“Tequila makes me feel… like I don’t want to spend tonight alone.”

Mason barks out a laugh and wraps an arm around my waist, earning me another glare from Lisa. He leans in and whispers into my ear. “Do you think Carter Clarke might actually kill me?”

I laugh and turn to face him, my nose brushing against his. I’m startled — somehow I didn’t expect him to be this close. Guess those shots are hitting me quicker than expected. “No,” I whisper. “Not because of me, anyway.”

Carter pulls on my hand and yanks me back again. This time he bends down and lifts me into his arms before I have a chance to pull away. I gasp and hit his arm, but he ignores me and walks straight to the front door, leaving a throng of shocked people in his wake. My eyes meet Dawn’s as we walk past the entrance, and she looks at me with raised brows. Carter walks so quickly I don’t even have a chance to explain to her what’s going on.

Carter is trembling with anger by the time he puts me in his car. I was planning on arguing with him further, but I know that riling him up further isn’t going to do me any good.

He gets behind the wheel and I buckle myself in. “Carter, did you drink?” I ask, my voice soft. He looks at me and clenches his jaw before shaking his head.

“Didn’t have a chance to grab a fucking drink. When I walked into the kitchen, you were all tangled up with Mason. Do you really think I’d get behind the wheel drunk, Emilia? Do you think that little of me?”

Carter is clenching the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles are white. I shake my head and he drives us to his apartment in silence. I thought he was going to drop me off at my dorm, so why are we here?

Chapter 15

Carter

Emilia is silent as she follows me into my apartment. Everything is quiet and dark, and I don’t bother to turn the lights on. I turn to face her as soon as the door closes, barely in control of my anger. Just seeing her with Mason, his arm wrapped around her waist, their faces so close together…

“Why did you bring me here?” Emilia asks. She crosses her arms, inadvertently pushing her tits out. She looks so damn beautiful in the small amount of light streaming through the windows. The idea of her going home with Mason tonight fucking tears me apart. What if Lisa hadn’t dragged me to that party? Would Emilia have gone home with him?

“Why were you with Mason?”

Emilia rolls her eyes and looks away. “That’s none of your business, Carter.”

“Do you even know him? He’s not a good guy, Emilia. He wouldn’t treat you well. What were you thinking?”

She barks out a humorless laugh and looks up at me in disbelief. “I wasn’t expecting him to treat me well. Hell, I was counting on it. I wasn’t planning on dating the guy.”

I clench my jaw and do my best to ignore the mental image. “So what were you planning on? Would you have fucked him?”

She shrugs. “I was leaning toward it, yeah. I don’t get the problem here. Didn’t you say you’re all for casual hook-ups? Or are you just upset that I got with your little girlfriend’s man?”

“Is this the tequila talking?” I say through clenched teeth. Granted, Lisa would be really fucking upset if Emilia and Mason got together, but nowhere near as upset as I would be. I wasn’t thinking of Lisa at all when I carried Emilia out of there.
