“Lisa isn’t dating anyone. She can’t be your brother’s girlfriend.”
Pure heartbreak flashes through Mason’s eyes and he swallows hard. “My brother is dead. He was a soldier. Like I said, it’s complicated.”
I blink in disbelief. “I’m really sorry for your loss,” I whisper, my voice breaking. I can’t imagine what it’s like to lose your sibling, and to deal with the guilt of falling for the person they loved. Mason smiles tightly and looks back at his textbook. It’s as though he’s stuck in memories he can’t shake himself out of, and I grab his hand. He squeezes back and smiles at me as best as he can.
Our luck must be rotten, because as we’re sitting here with our hands entwined and our faces close to each other, Lisa walks up to us. She looks at me with such blazing fury that I shrink back. Mason’s grip on my hand tightens and I try to pull it away, but he won’t let me. He sends me a pleading look and I look back at him through narrowed eyes.
“Mason, you’re early,” Lisa says. Her eyes drop to our joined hands before she looks back up at me. “What are you doing here, Emilia? Didn’t you leave with Carter last night?”
I clear my throat, my cheeks reddening.
“We were just hanging out,” Mason says. He moves his chair closer to mine and Lisa grabs her phone angrily.
I lean into Mason and whisper in his ear. “Stop it. I won’t play along with this. I won’t play a role in hurting Lisa in any way. She’s always been nice to me and I’m not going to sit here and let you hurt her.”
Mason sighs and turns to look into my eyes, our faces far too close together. “Why did you have to be so sweet, Emilia?”
I glare at him and take out my books. Mason is trouble, for sure. Lisa taps her finger on the table impatiently and stares at me, making me more and more uncomfortable by the second. “So what happened when you left with Carter?” she asks, her eyes moving to Mason’s vindictively. “I doubt he just took you back to your dorm.”
Mason grits his teeth and stares her down. “You know all about that, don’t you? How many times have you left parties with Carter Clarke?”
The reminder hurts and I bite down on my lip nervously. I feel caught in between Mason and Lisa, and it’s awkward as hell. Lisa looks away, and I try my best to ignore the mental image of her with Carter. I try my best to ignore both of them as I attempt to get some studying done, but the atmosphere is tense as hell. It’s like every minute takes an hour. This is the last time I’m sitting anywhere near Mason. It’s just not worth the stress.
He leans into me again and I’m tempted to swat him away. He chuckles and whispers into my ear. “Look who joined the party?”
He drops his arm back around my chair and grins up at Carter, whose eyes are moving between me and Mason, his expression unreadable.
“Lisa,” he says, taking a seat next to her. I’m instantly enraged that he didn’t even greet me. Things seemed so perfect this morning, yet now I guess we’re back to being distant. I look down at my book angrily. It doesn’t look like I’m going to get any studying done here at all, but I don’t want to go back to my dorm and face a grumpy Kate either.
Carter seems to struggle to focus as much as I do, and eventually he drops his pen on the table and looks up at me.
“Emilia,” he murmurs, tipping his head toward the exit. He gets up and walks toward the bathrooms, and I follow him. Seems like he isn’t as unaffected as I thought he was.
Chapter 18
Carter
Fucking Mason again. Why the fuck is she with Mason? I was hoping Lisa was joking when she texted me — guess not. I walk toward the staff toilet that I know no one ever uses and look around before pulling Emilia in and locking the door behind us.
She gasps and looks at me with wide eyes. “We aren’t supposed to be in here,” she whisper-shouts, and I chuckle. Why the hell does she need to be so damn cute? I lean in and cage her in with my arms.
“Remind me, Minx. Did we or did we not agree that we’d be exclusive last night?”
Her eyes flash with annoyance and she nods. “We did,” she says through gritted teeth.
“So why are you with Mason, holding hands and shit?”
Emilia raises her brows and looks up at me in anger. She puts her palms against my chest and sighs. “Did you see me sleeping with him, Carter? Because last time I checked, all we were doing was hanging out.”
I’m hit with uncontrollable possessiveness. Thank fuck we agreed we’d be exclusive, because I don’t think I could deal with not knowing whether I’m the only one she’s with. I don’t want to date her, but I don’t want her to date anyone else either. I’m a selfish asshole, but I want her to myself. I step closer to her and push my body against hers. The edges of her lips tip up, as though she’s fighting a smile, and I drop my lips to hers.
“Just remember I’m the only one you’ll be fucking for the time being. Only me, Emilia.” I run my hand over her body and pull her skirt up, my fingers tracing over her thighs. She squirms against me and I smile against her lips before kissing her. She melts against me as our tongues tangle together and I lift her up. Emilia wraps her legs around my hips and buries her hands in my hair while I push her against the door. She moans against my lips when my fingers find their way between her legs. I push her underwear aside to find her already soaking wet. I grin and bite down on her lower lip. “Already wet, Minx? What do you want?”
Emilia whimpers as I trace my fingers around her clit, not touching her where she wants me to. “Please Carter, I want you.”
Good enough for me. “I’m going to fuck you against this door, Emilia.”
She gulps and nods, her eyes blazing with the same passion I’m feeling. I lift her higher and manage to grab a condom from my wallet. I’m frantic and impatient as I undo my jeans. I grab Emilia’s hands and hold them above her head as I align my dick with her. I look straight into her eyes as I push into her, and her lips fall open in delight. She’s so fucking beautiful.
