“They’ll be bringing her out in the next fifteen to twenty minutes. She’ll have to stay in recovery for at least an hour, maybe more, then they will let you see her briefly. That’s when the doctor will talk to you.”

“Can I go sit with her in recovery?”

“No, they won’t allow that.”

“Please ask.”

She gave me a sympathetic look. “I’ll see what I can do, but I’m not making any promises.”

Once again I thanked her before she went over to speak briefly to Regan and Janessa. Needing something to do while I waited and since the kids were asleep, as soon as Pam left, I went over to the old ladies.

“I’m gonna go out to the waiting room and see who’s there and give them an update. Would you mind staying here in case they wake up? I don’t want them to get scared if they do.”

“Go, we’ll stay right here. I’ve tried to keep them updated through Steel and Hammer, but they’ll want to hear it from you. Hang in there, You’ll be able to see her before you know it,” Regan said as she squeezed my hand. I squeezed hers back.

Out in the waiting room, it looked like the common room of the clubhouse. It was filled with bikers and, in several cases, some of the wives. I knew not all of them could come because someone had to watch the other kids. Seeing me, Terror was the first to come toward me.

“Let’s step outside, okay? It’s too crowded in here,” I told him. He nodded and gestured for the others to follow us. Outside the door, we gathered under a big tree. It was evening time and darkness was moving in.

“What’s the news? Regan’s last text said the kids are probably coming home tonight. That they’re fine,” Terror started out asking.

“They are. Right now they’re asleep, thank God. Pam, our nurse, just came to tell me that Tonya should be out of surgery in the next fifteen minutes or so and then going to recovery for an hour or more. She’s going to try and get me in there, but she’s not confident they’ll let me back there.”

“That’s great news. That means she made it through the surgery. She’s strong, young, and healthy. She might need rehab for her shoulder, but that’s nothing,” Ghost said. I knew he knew more than the others since he’d been a military medic and was a certified paramedic.

“I hope so. They said at first she’d lost a lot of blood. I’ll need to hire help when she goes home to help take care of her and the kids. She can’t do it all and I can’t be with her all the time. Not between work and prospecting.”

“Forget about your prospecting duties. Those can wait. She’s what matters. We’ll get you guys whatever you need. Did the sheriff come talk to you yet?” Savage asked.

“He stopped long enough to see how we were doing and to tell me they were checking into who might have shot her. He didn’t seem too confident. Abel, the guy who stopped to help them said he didn’t get a license plate or see their faces. He thought there were two in the car and it was a dark sedan, maybe black or dark blue. It took off as soon as they saw him coming.” I knew they could hear my frustration and anger. I wanted my hands around the throats of the bastards who had done this to her.

“We’ve got Smoke seeing if he can find any cameras either in town or going past our place that might be them. If so, if we’re lucky, we might get a license plate. They were smart. Whoever they were, they knew to hit her outside of town. Less chance of witnesses and no cameras,” Terror informed me with a frown.

“I want to know who it was. Surely, Dan hasn’t gone off the deep end and done this,” I uttered.

“He can’t. We double-checked and he’s still in the treatment facility. They don’t allow calls, letters, emails or visitors for the first six weeks or so. There’s no way he could’ve done this,” Menace reminded me.

“Then it doesn’t make sense! She doesn’t have any enemies. It has to be someone with a grudge against the club or she was just a random victim, which I doubt.” I was trying to think like a cop although it was hard.

“Forget about all that right now. Get back in there with your family. We’ll leave a few of the guys here in case you need anything. We’ll rotate through. When the kids are ready to be discharged, we’ll make sure they’re taken care of so you can stay with Tonya,” Terror promised. All I could do was give him a back-slapping hug. I was too choked up to say anything. After I was done and the rest all consoled me, I went back inside to be with my kids.

It was closer to a half hour before word came that she was in recovery. Despite Pam, Regan, and Janessa’s connections, they wouldn’t allow me in the recovery area with her. I wanted to tear the hospital apart to be with her, but I knew I couldn’t. I was a damn cop after all and I didn’t want to get thrown out, so I waited impatiently.

As I waited for them to allow me to see her, the doctor came and said he’d completed the discharge paperwork for all three kids. He went through the list of symptoms to watch for and would require me to bring them back to get checked, then they were free to go. Regan and Janessa had offered to go to the compound to be with them. I gave both of them hugs and thanked them.

The kids wanted to see their mama, but I explained she was still asleep. Then they wanted me to go home with them and it killed me to tell them no. They were upset, but they did seem to settle a bit when I told them I needed to stay with their mama so she wouldn’t be alone and scared. Outside, I helped them into one of the club’s SUVs. Someone had recovered their car seats from Tonya’s car. I gave them kisses and hugs then sent them on their way.

Back in the waiting room, with Sniper, Gunner, and Lance, I waited. None of us said a word. Finally, Pam came to get me and told me where I could go to see her. They’d taken her from recovery to a bed on the medical-surgical floor. She informed us there was a waiting room on that floor if the guys wanted to wait in it. I thanked her then we headed straight there. It was all I could do not to run up the stairs rather than wait on the elevator.

Once up there, they went to the waiting room while I went to the nurses’ station. Introducing myself, I asked to be taken to Tonya’s room. A young blonde nurse was the one to offer to take me to it. She tried to chat as we walked down the long hallway.

“Officer Cane, she’s right down here. She’s still a little groggy and might be asleep but don’t worry, that’s normal. It’s residual from the anesthesia they used during surgery. We have her on a pain pump and some IV fluids. Dr. Harker is being called to come speak to the two of you. He should be here shortly.”

“Thank you,” I told her.

As she opened the door to Tonya’s room, I pushed past her to go to her bed. Tonya had her eyes closed. She looked pale and weak to me. Her hospital gown was hanging off her left shoulder and I could see it was heavily bandaged. The IV and monitors were around the bed.

“Let us know if you need anything,” her nurse whispered before she left.
