“And you’ve been doing jobs for them the whole time they’ve been in prison?” Hawk asked him.

“Yeah, although not as much as we used to. Going to prison cut into their businesses. They only have a few still operating. They want to be able to come out and have money and not have to start all over.”

I walked over to the table and leaned down so we were nose-to-nose. “You’re going to give us the name of everyone you know who is part of this operation. We want names and what they do in the organization. We want all the contact numbers you have and anything else you can tell us. You have an hour. Start talking, because at the end of this hour, what you give me will determine if I end it or go on torturing you. Smoke, are you ready to write all this down?”

“You know it. I’ve got my laptop and a pad of paper right here,” he said with a smile.

That’s how for an hour, as I held a knife in front of him, Elio Colombo spilled his guts. I had to hand it to him, he gave us a lot. It wasn’t everyone or the top ones—Matteo’s lieutenants—but I could guess at them. Those who avoided prison time were likely still working for him. When he was done, he was hoarse. I gave him a drink of water.

He sighed. “That’s it. That’s everyone I know of or even heard rumored to work for them. You have the business sites I know of and contact numbers. You even have the guard’s name. Please, don’t let me suffer. I’m ready. Will you let me say a prayer before you do it?”

I nodded. Who was I to not allow him this final thing?

“Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion, blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge. Amen.”

I recognized Psalm 51. It was one often recited by a friend’s father when I’d go to his house growing up. His dad was a big believer and liked to teach us about how good Christians should live. Obviously, I hadn’t followed that path totally. I wasn’t sure if what Elio had done over his lifetime could be forgiven, but that was between him and God. When he was done, he looked resolved as he met my eyes. He nodded.

“I’m ready,” he said, then closed his eyes.

Picking up the knife again, I placed the tip of the blade at the edge of his ribcage and I shoved it up and straight into his heart. His breath hissed in and it was only a matter of a few seconds before he breathed his last. I removed the knife and went to the sink to cleanse it. I was on autopilot now. I was working through what I was going to do in my head. A slap on the shoulder brought me out of my daze. I glanced over my shoulder to see Hawk and the others standing there.

“You’re not going to do this alone. We need time to investigate and come up with a plan that rids us of this threat while keeping your ass out of prison. They don’t like cops in there, you know,” Hawk said with a smirk.

“He’s right. We needed to talk to Bull and find out who his inside helper was and what happened. Then we’ll go after the businesses and the other people working for them. I think we can have some help with that. This sounds like a job for the Dark Patriots, doesn’t it? As for Matteo and his sons, we’ll find a way to get to them on the inside,” Terror assured me.

“I want to be the one to end those fuckers on the inside, not one of Bull’s friends. I want to face them as I end their miserable lives. I owe them for Frankie. I should’ve killed them years ago instead of letting Nyssa send them to prison.”

“I want to help. They made Nyssa’s life hell too,” Hawk jumped in to add.

Slowly Terror nodded. “Okay, we’ll figure out how we can get you two in there, do the deed and get your asses out without getting caught. You don’t expect fucking much do you?” he grumbled.

The others all chuckled. As the buzz of conversations continued around me, I finished cleaning the knife and myself. Now that this was done, I needed to see and hold Tonya and the kids. I knew the others would take care of the bodies and the car.

I walked out and got on my bike without saying a word. No one stopped me. I started it and sped back to the house. I ached to be with them and see that they were alive and well. Until this craziness was truly over, they wouldn’t be leaving the compound unless it was necessary and with an army. Same would go for Nyssa and Isabella. No one was going to take my family and best friend away from me.

Tonya: Chapter 20

While I waited for Law to return and hopefully tell me why those men were so intent on killing me, I tried to play with the kids. After I got back, I called and had the kids brought to me from the daycare. I needed to have them where I could see them. What if they had been with me again today? They wouldn’t have been hurt, but the trauma of the first time still was with them. The twins had woken up with nightmares more than once, crying. Dylan understood less, but he was sad looking more often. I worried that they might need counseling, which was crazy to think of at their ages. But if they needed it, I’d find a way to get it for them.

We were sitting at the table in the kitchen, coloring pictures when the door opened and Law walked in. I jumped up and flew across the room to throw myself in his arms. He crushed me to him and buried his face in the crook of my neck.

“Everything is going to be okay, Valkyrie, I promise. God, I’m so fucking glad you weren’t hurt again. I don’t think I could’ve stood it. I’m glad the kids weren’t with us.”

“Me too. I’m fine, just shaken up and wondering why. Did you find out anything?”

“I did. Let’s wait until we get the kids down for the night then I’ll tell you what I can. Some of this is club business, so I can’t give you details. However, I can tell you who and why. For now, all I want to do is enjoy my family. Let’s play, watch TV, and cook dinner, then I’ll help get them bathed and put to bed.”

I wanted to argue and insist he tell me now, but I knew that wouldn’t work with Law. He’d tell me when he was ready. Plus, I think it would do us all good to enjoy a night as a family, being normal. Letting go of him, I let the kids mob him. I had to let Dylan out of his highchair to get to him, but all three of them were chattering and telling him all about their day. I couldn’t wipe the smile that sight put on my face.

The rest of the time went just as he planned. He sat and colored with us then played with the kids. When that got old, he found a children’s movie and put it on. They all fought to sit on our laps. We were bunched up on the couch like a pile of puppies. Eventually, I got up to make dinner. I kept it simple. I’d made homemade dough the night before. I turned it into homemade pizza.

They all loved it and couldn’t get enough. Even Dylan got a piece. He had more teeth and as long as I cut it into tiny pieces, he could eat it. After dinner, it was bath time then into bed to hear a story. They wanted Law to read to them, which was their new request at night. I sat on the floor and listened. Once they were asleep, we shut the door, and he gently tugged my arm to lead me to our room.

After the day I had, I wanted two things. One was to know who was doing this and why. Two, I wanted my man to make love to me. I was healed enough. I planned to seduce him if he gave me any trouble. He closed and locked the door. His arms came around me to hug me close.

“Babe, I want you to take a bath and get ready for bed then I’ll tell you.”

“Why not now?”
