When he didn’t answer, she twisted her foot, mashing his nuts even more.

He squawked in pain. “No!” he gasped.

“Who do you work for then?”

“Black…Bloods,” he choked out.

She rocked back, letting some blood flow back into his testes. The cartel was working with the arms dealer to find the men responsible for putting away Roderigo’s brother? It shouldn’t surprise her, really—lowlifes banded together when they had a common goal or cash was involved.

“What do the Black Bloods have to gain?” she asked.

“Leverage.”

She exchanged looks with Frost and Mustang. Leverage over the arms dealer and therefore free guns for their group.

She turned back to the slug of a man on the floor. “I’m here to negotiate. Who do I talk to?”

A gleam hit the man’s eyes. “You? A woman?”

“Damn, this dude doesn’t know when to quit,” Frost muttered.

She crouched next to the guy, leaning over to glare into his dull eyes. “Why not a woman?” she asked in Spanish.

He stared at her.

“Not any woman,” she pressed.

Frost gave her the eye but his face remained impassive.

She knew what came next for Slade. The man was in big danger and time was running out.

“You’re going to set me up with the Black Bloods leader,” she told the guy responsible for her baby daddy’s disappearance.

He sneered. “Why should I?”

“Because I need this deal for my boss. And you do not want to make my boss unhappy.” She ran the tip of her fingernail over the button on his shirt. “Got it?”

He nodded.

“Now get up and go find your leader. Bring him here and then call me on this.” She reached into her pocket and pulled out the burn phone she made a habit to carry. Too many times it had saved her ass in a tough situation.

And sometimes Slade tried to contact her on it.

She flicked her jaw at the guys. “Help him to his feet.”

They each took an arm and ruthlessly hauled him upright. He wavered as if he’d enjoyed too many worms at the bottom of bottles. She jabbed a finger at him. “You will bring your leader to the hotel bar in two hours. Got it?”

He nodded, eyes trained on the floor.

“And if you don’t bring him, if you warn anybody about what you’re doing…we will hunt you down and kill you.” Her threat was delivered with an impassive darkness.

The man nodded and took a step toward the door, but Mustang shot out an arm, barring his way.

Mustang’s eyes met Lena’s. “Apologize to the lady.”

He kept his gaze downcast, but she didn’t take it as submission. Men like him didn’t back down from any fight and only took orders from their leaders.

“Lo siento.”
