Slade stopped. “What the hell?”

“Sorry, man. This is Alpha only right now.”

He balled his fists. “You’re fucking joking.”

Apollo shook his head. “Wish I were. Sparrow’s orders.”

Around Apollo’s shoulder, Slade’s gaze locked on Lena’s. Using her eyes, she tried to convey that he should let it go. When he stepped back, she relaxed a little. Then she hurried to take a seat with the rest of her team.

She’d seen the disappointment in Slade’s eyes. And a glint of anger too. He didn’t like being left out of anything where she was concerned, and now he had even more reason to go full-on warrior on her behalf.

Sparrow cleared his throat. “A small team’s being assembled to go raid the kid’s place. We found where he’s been staying.”

She didn’t even make it to her seat before this announcement—or before Slade burst into the room.

The air sucked out of the space, and all eyes jerked to him.

“I need to speak to Lena for a minute.”

She swung her gaze to Sparrow. He looked far from amused.

She returned her attention to Slade and saw his jaw working, which could only mean he was gearing up for an argument. Before that happened, she held up one finger to Sparrow.

He nodded and she rushed back out, barreling past her ex. He slammed the door shut to block out their voices.

She narrowed her eyes at him. “Don’t even start, Slade. I’m in.”

He sliced a hand through the air. “You’re out.”

Rage bottled inside her. For once, she would try to remain calm with him. The last thing they needed was a scene.

“Um. No. I’ll be out soon if I go through with this.” She waved at her stomach.

Fury rippled over his face. “If?” he barked.

She wasnothaving this discussion right now—or here, with her team all listening in through a thin slab of metal.

She shoved Slade out of her way and reached for the handle. “Bye, Slade.”

“Lena…”

She ignored the choked sound of her name on his lips. “I’m going. You can’t stop me.”

“I never could, Lena. That’s always been the problem between us.”

She sighed. “And here I thought you finally got it. But you’re still trying to protect me.”

He threw out an arm, barring her way. “There’s too much at risk and you know it.”

She met his stare. “Back off, Slade. I can take care of myself.”

He moved to touch her belly again, but she stomped into the room and shut the door in his face. Maybe trying to shut him out of her heart once and for all.

She sucked in a breath and faced her team. As if she could really shut Slade Overstreet out of her life forever.

She couldn’t even manage to stop loving him.
