“It’s in the bag!” she hollered back.

“I’ll look again!” Slade waved at her.

She let out a breath and focused on the target once more.

“Hey, Lena!”

Dear god. What now?

She looked back at him.

“What age can the baby have ice cream?”

Lena faced forward and fired the shot. Without looking at where it hit, she handed off her rifle to Lachlan and hurried to grab the baby before his father gave him a terrible stomachache. If he’d already fed their three-month-old ice cream, then he was staying up all night walking the floor with little Slade.

Charlie team was up next, and while they took their positions, Frost approached her.

She arched a brow. “Well? Which one of us will be babysitting?”

“I will,” he griped.

She burst out laughing, which sent the baby propped on her shoulder into a fit of happy kicking.

“Damn, kids really can be cute, can’t they?”

She never thought the big SEAL would look so damn sappy, but it suited him.

She tilted her head. “Well, I don’t know about your kid, considering it will have your genes, but mine’s pretty damn adorable.” She swung the baby down into her arms and stared into eyes that were turning her shade of brown, while he possessed Slade’s dark coloring.

A tap on her shoulder made her turn. Sparrow stood in front of her, legs widened in the stance that meant he had official business to discuss. “Hand the baby to Gia. I need you for a moment.”

As she handed the baby to Gia, her stomach hatched butterflies. Suddenly, she was so nervous and she didn’t even know why when they’d already faced so much. Nothing could surprise her anymore.

As she tagged along behind Sparrow, they passed Charlie and Slade gave her a questioning look. She shrugged. Then she found herself standing in front of the entire Blackout team.

“Everyone, listen up. We’ve got a lot of rivalry going on here today, so keep it clean.”

Several people grumbled in response, which made everyone laugh.

“Now I have an announcement to make.”

Lena glanced up at Sparrow. His face gave nothing away. If he was about to say something bad, he would take her aside and do it privately, not to a crowd.

“Commander Barrett has been watching a certain member of the team for a couple years now.”

Her stomach pitched, and this time she couldn’t even blame morning sickness.

Sparrow went on, “This member of Blackout Alpha has proved herself again and again in the line of duty and she especially excels when it comes to strategizing.”

Her lips parted on a gasp. What was happening? Was he about to…

“I’m happy to announce that Lena Graham has received a promotion. And if she’ll accept the position as Blackout’s strategist, we will be in very, very good hands.” He leveled her with a look of affection.

Lena couldn’t stop the gasp from passing her lips. A promotion? She found Slade in the front of the group. Did he know about this? Judging by the look on his face, he didn’t know either.

A cheer went up, and everyone applauded. Sparrow patted her on the back. She shook his hand, a deep respect lingering in their gesture.

Her insides wavered back and forth, though. The promotion was more than she’d ever hoped for when she signed her Blackout papers. It also meant more time with her son, which benefited her little family.
