And it felt rather good.

Maybe Luke wasn’t as annoying as she’d originally thought.

“Okay, okay,” he said, trying and failing to school his features as her giggles drew more chuckles. “Points for that money GOT impression, but stop trying to distract me, Creeper.”

She hadn’t been, but if that’s what he thought, whatever. Andy sighed. “Okay, one, stop calling me Creeper, and two, I did want to go. Sort of.”

He cocked his head, waiting for her to elaborate.

Andy turned away from the intensity in those hazel eyes and busied herself re-hanging a sarong. “While I did want to hang out with them, I just… I didn’t want to go to a club tonight. It’s been a long day, and I’m tired.”

“But not too tired to go swim twenty-five laps.”

“Well, that’s relaxing,” she shot back defensively. “I don’t have to talk to people. So long as I get in the pool at my apartment after nine, there’s usually no one there.”

He laughed again. This time at her expense. “You really are going swimming when you get home, aren’t you?”

“Yes.”

He pushed away from the rack. “Well, I must admit, you’re a surprising little bird. I was positive you were so ga-ga over Kyle you’d have jumped at the chance to go hang with him.”

Andy rolled her eyes. “I’m notga-gaover Kyle.”

Luke tilted his chin.

“Okay, maybe I’m a little ga-ga.” Andy stared blankly at the skirts in front of her, a kaleidoscope of blue, purple, and diaphanous teal swimming in her vision. “It doesn’t matter now though. I’m not going to act on my desires.”

There was a suspicious snort next to her, but when her gaze jerked to Luke, he’d turned to grab the board they’d taken down earlier. “And why is that?” he asked, striding over to the quiver.

“Because I shouldn’t,” Andy said prudishly. “It would be inappropriate to have designs on the boss.”

Now Luke did huff out a snort as he slid the board back into the rack. “Inappropriate?”

“Well, yes. Everyone would think I was just trying to sleep with him to get ahead.”

“Oh my god. Are you for real with this?”

“Stop laughing at me.”

His amusement was getting annoying. As she scowled at him, he sobered.

“Alright. Let me break this down for you, Little Bird. First, there are a total of seven people currently employed here. Two of those” — he waved a finger between them — “already know about your ‘designs’ on the boss, and I can assure you the rest would not give a fuck. Second, I highly doubt this ‘sleeping with the boss to get ahead’ shit would work out for you too well over here.”

He grabbed a shirt off a nearby rack — a black crop top similar to the one Mary had worn, except it was emblazoned with the Sin Spot’s sparkling maraschino cherry logo. “If that’s your angle, you might wanna trade up uniforms and go duke it out at this joint with all the clubbers looking for a come up by getting into Kyle’s pants.”

“Of course it’s not my angle!” Andy ripped the top from his hands and re-hung it. “I do not have an angle. I am not trying to get into Kyle’s pants for any other reason than to… well…”

“Have an orgasm?”

“Yes!”

Luke’s knowing chuckle had her cheeks flaming. “Stop laughing at me, jerk.”

He gave a couple more insufferable snorts.

Andy grabbed the broom Reg had abandoned and began sweeping the floors. Violently.

“Alright, alright,” Luke said, holding his hands up, “I’m not laughing at you.”
