“SPF?”

“One hundred.”

“Holy shit, I think I’m getting a little turned on right now.”

She snorted. “You’re absurd.”

“That a step up from insufferable?”

She held up a hand, thumb and index finger stretched a few millimeters apart.

He grinned. “Well, that’s progress."

Dropping her bag onhistowel, she rolled her eyes. “So I’m assuming you summoned me here because you have another lesson for me? One that doesn’t involve you ogling my legs.” He crossed his arms over his rash guard and shot her a look that suggested she had no room to talk about the ogling business. “Okay, fine. What’s on the docket for today?”

“Lesson Three,” he began, “and probably the most important thing you should know about my boy is—”

“I thought Lesson Two was the most important.”

“Nah. This one’s way more important.”

She sighed, not looking altogether surprised or pleased when he stepped aside to reveal the foam surfboard he’d planted in the sand earlier.

“If you wanna get in good with Kyle,” he continued, “then you gotta get good with this.”

“You want me to learn how to surf?”

“Yup.”

Another sigh. “I’m really not that wild about sand.”

“You picked a helluva place to get hired with that attitude.”

Ignoring his cheek, she side-eyed the white curls of foam rolling into the shore with a great deal of concern. “I’m also not real comfortable out there.”

“Yeah, I had a hunch.” His expression softened. “But you asked me to help you attract Kyle, and honestly, this is the best way.”

“Really?”

“Oh yeah, my boy has a major thing for the Bettys.”

“Bettys?”

He winked. “Bad-ass surfer babes.”

She hung her head. “This is hopeless.”

“Nah, Bird. You got me, and I’m a really good surf instructor.”

She slanted a suspicious glance up at him. “You told Casey and the girls you didn’t have time for it.”

“I don’t,” he said with a shrug. “Not for some chicks who are just gonna leave their boards behind at their Airbnb when they fly back home to Tennessee.”

“Texas.”

“Whatever.” He jabbed a finger at her. “Point is, I knowyouwill have a vested interest in learning. Because you know I’m not kidding when I tell you not only is this the best way to win Kyle over, but it’s also the fastest.”

“I think you’re grossly overestimating my athletic abilities.”
