And hell, with those charcoal swim trunks, Luke literally was a man in a gray suit chasing her down.Damn it. Don’t think of the trunks. Or the sexy man buns.

Too late. The distraction cost her, and Luke ended up beating her to the shallow end of the pool by a full body length. But rather than gloat over his win after she cruised to a stop beside him, he surprised her by simply holding out his fist.

Andy bumped it with her own, a bolt of pleasure shooting through her at the contact.

“I stand corrected,” he drawled, “maybe youarea fish.”

She sucked in her cheeks and puffed out her lips.

Sweeping his dripping bangs from his face, Luke laughed at her silly goldfish impression. Being the highly competitive person she was, Andy was pleased to note the rapid rise and fall of his chest. “Holy shit, you’re fast!” he said, sounding genuinely impressed.

Andy shrugged off the praise. “Swimming’s the only sport I was ever any good at.”

“Well, thank fuck for that because it’s pretty important for the one you’re about to learn.” Pulling the surfboard down from the side of the pool, Luke tugged it towards them.

Andy side-eyed the thing while fixing her sagging ponytail.

Luke pointed to her favorite anti-fog, anti-glare swim goggles. “Lose those.”

She frowned. “I don’t like getting water in my eyes.”

“Trust me, you won’t need ’em. Surfers don’t spend a lot of time with their heads underwater. Not if they can help it anyway.”

She hesitated.

He sighed. “Take them off, Andy. They’ll just make you look like a kook out there.”

“A kook?”

“A beginner.”

“I am a beginner.”

Luke gave a harassed snort. “Yes, and also a major pain in my ass. Now stop stalling.”

Andy tossed her protective eyewear to the side of the pool, muttering about the harmful effects of UV rays.

Ignoring her grumblings, Luke grasped the sides of the board floating between them. “Always mount from the side. Grab the rails like this, then slide your chest on first, followed by your legs.” Luke demonstrated the skill a couple times before pushing the board her way. “Your turn.”

Andy gripped the length of foam and slid on as directed. The board was super-buoyant and barely sank under her weight.

“Nice,” Luke praised. “Now shift your body up a bit. You want to find the sweet spot in the middle when paddling. The nose of your board shouldn’t stick out of the water more than a couple inches. Any higher, you’re probably sitting too far back towards the tail, and yes, that’s another way people can tell you’re a kook.”

Andy shimmied forward so her chest and stomach were in the middle of the board. “Kook sounds derogatory,” she said, tossing Luke another frown.

“I didn’t come up with it. What would you prefer? Newb?”

Andy thought about it for a moment, then lifted a hand and brandished a finger. “I think I prefer Bird.”

He barked out a laugh.

Resting her head on the board, Andy enjoyed the hearty sound of his chuckles. Making Luke laugh was becoming one of her new favorite pastimes. For some reason, it just seemed to come easier with him than it did practically every other datable male she’d ever encountered.

Not that she wanted to date Luke.

Of course not.

It was Kyle she wanted to score a date with.Himshe wanted to laugh and joke around with.Himshe wanted to charm the pants off—
