“You are so weird.”

“Better than ridiculous.”

With a snort, she set to work sprinkling cheese over a couple tortillas. He added peppers to his own before topping them off and placing them on the griddle to brown.

A few minutes later, Andy and Luke were tucking into crispy, cheesy goodness. Famished as they both were, it didn’t take long to finish their meal. Licking a bit of sour cream from her lip, Andy gave a contented sigh, then — glancing towards the balcony — gave another one that was decidedly less so. One that was a little pitiful actually.

Luke suspected her thoughts had veered right back to Kyle. If he were being honest, he was starting to really dislike the fact that her thoughts were so frequently on his best friend.

But fuck if he was going to get all moody about it now. Luke had known the score going into this deal, and he owed it to her to keep offering assistance on the Kyle-front. Especially considering how brave she’d been out in the water today.

So when Andy finally spoke — quietly thanking him for making her feel better about her little “setback” with Kyle on the beach earlier — he could only say, “Ya know, I don’t believe it was a setback.”

“You don’t?” she asked dubiously.

Thinking back to the way his friend had looked at Andy when she’d made that comment about the baby waves, Luke narrowed his eyes. There’d been a definite spark of interest there.

Again, if Luke were being honest, this also rankled. It was as if the caveman part of himself — who’d rather enjoyed yanking on Andy’s hair, and her response to said yank — was getting all pissy and possessive and shit.

Well, fuck that guy. He could go right back to his cave and chill.

“Nah,” he finally said, “I don’t. Actually, I think it was a step forward.”

Now she looked really confused. “I’m not following you at all here.”

Slipping back into teacher mode, Luke turned on his barstool. “Lesson…what the fuck number are we on?”

“Seven.”

“Lesson Seven. Many an embarrassing moment can be smoothed over with a bit of well-timed humor.”

“What fortune cookie did you rip that from?”

“Sarcasm does not become you.”

“Another pearl of wisdom, but I’m still not following you.”

Luke folded his arms over his chest. “It’s simple really. You made my boy laugh.”

“I didn’t hear any laughing.”

“It was all there in his eyes when you made that crack about the baby waves. Trust me, Andy, I know Kyle, and he loves the funny girls.”

“But I wasn’t trying to be funny.”

“Even better!”

Peeling a globule of cheese from her plate, Andy popped it in her mouth and chewed as she cut a considering look towards the beach. “You really think I made progress with him today?”

“Yes, Andy, I do.”

She cracked another smile. A determined one. “Then I won’t give up.”

“Atta girl! You got this!”

Her grin widened. “I got this.”

“Hell yeah, you do—”
