True. All of it. But Andy still couldn’t help feeling a little shitty about the call her father was placing right now.

“So, in other news,” Kory drawled, cutting a sly glance her way, “you’re taking surf lessons with Mary’s hunky brother Luke?”

“Oh my gosh,” Andy groaned as Kory batted her lashes teasingly, “not you too.”

Kory giggled, then sighed, her shoulders falling. “Oh, don’t worry. I’m not gonna give you a hard time about your love life when mine’s such a mess.” Her hand rose to tug on her hummingbird pendant, and Andy noticed the subtle lines of stress furrowing her brow.

“What’s wrong? Did you and Gray get into an argument or something?”

“No,” Kory said glumly. “Yes. Kind of. Ugh, my stupid boss is driving me crazy!”

Andy assumed Kory was referring to her boss at DK since she frequently needed to vent about the woman. “What did Cassandra do now?”

“She wants me to work the Comic-Con again.”

“But isn’t that when you and Gray are spending your week in Yosemite?”

“Yes.Right smack in the middle of it.”

“Oh.” Now Andy saw the problem. Frowning, she snagged a Dorito from the mondo-sized bag on the counter. “Can’t you just tell Cassandra you’ve had this trip booked for a year? And also, didn’t you work a boatload of hours at the last two conventions? Can’t she find someone else for this one?”

“Are you kidding? Devil Wears Burberry Lady expects everyone at headquarters to be there. I swear even if I was about to give birth to Gray’s baby it still wouldn’t matter.”

Andy’s gaze flickered to the flat expanse of Kory’s stomach. “Areyou about to give birth to Gray’s baby?”

“Ha! Very funny.”

They both giggled before stuffing their faces with more chips.

After a moment of chewing, Kory’s eyes pooled. “I broke the news to Gray on the way home from work just now.”

“I guess he didn’t take it too well.”

“Nope. I mean, he was sweet about it. Understanding. But I know he was upset with me, and I’m definitely sensing he’s growing more frustrated with my work.”

“Sounds likeyou’regrowing more frustrated with your work.”

“True.” Kory sighed. “But I need to hang with this job just a little longer. I’m learning so much from it about the industry. I know all the hours of dealing with Cassandra will pay off eventually. Speaking of, I better get back to the office.”

“Yep.”

Kory made to clean up, but Andy waved her off. “I got this.”

“Thanks.” Snatching up her bag, Kory strode for the door.

“Hey!” Andy called out. Her roommate glanced back. “Things will work out. Gray loves you. You two are endgame. And nobody, least of all Devil Wears Blueberry Lady, is going to change that.”

Kory giggled, jade eyes shimmering. “Just for that,” she said thickly, “you’re getting some berry cobbler tonight, my friend.”

Andy smiled as Kory slipped from the apartment.

Chapter seventeen

Forthenexttwoweeks, Andy was largely able to do as her father had instructed. That is, she stopped worrying about the fate of her former coworkers and concentrated on building relationships with her new ones.

As chatty as he was, Reggie was easy enough to get along with, and, judging by the number of signatures on his cast, well-liked by just about everyone in town. Andy had initially been concerned Mary’s only other full-time employee might hold a grudge since she’d swooped in and snatched up the assistant manager spot the old one had vacated.

But Andy had soon realized Reginald Hamilton didn’t have an ambitious bone in his body. At least not for anything outside of improving his surfing game.
