“Of course. Dwarf steel is the strongest.”

“Sweet.” Luke scooted the armchair over to the desk as Andy cleared a spot for the snacks.

“I’ve already set him up for you,” she added with a smirk.

Sitting down, Luke checked out the avatar displayed on the screen: a brawny little fucker with a braided blonde beard and green eyes she’d dubbed “His Tallness.”

“Ha!” Luke said, snatching up a Pizza Roll. “That’s legit.”

Andy winked. “Alright, so the premise of the game is that we have to find the child who was born under the Blood Moon because, according to a prophecy, he’s the only one who can defeat the evil sorcerer Zuron. All we know is that the kid has a special birthmark on his back.”

“Is it a lightning bolt?”

“Shut it.”

“Do we also need to toss a ring into a volcano?”

She cut a warning glare his way, but the sparkle in her eyes said she was amused.

They logged in and joined Andy’s crew as they were searching an old monastery. It took a minute for Luke to sort out both the controls and the dynamics of the team, but years of gaming had him catching on quick. In a flurry of keystrokes, he directed His Tallness to pick the lock on a heavy oak door so they could venture into some catacombs.

Not far into the creepy subterranean lair, their group came up against a mob of giant flesh-eating arachnids. Luke backed his dwarf up against Andy’s elf, and while she drilled the beasts with arrows, His Tallness chopped off spider legs like they were twigs.

It was bloody good fun, and everyone seemed really into it. Not the least of which was Andy’s friend PJ, who was funny as hell. As her warrior character covered the two mages who were busy casting, she sent Luke the following nod of appreciation.

PunkJ669:U go, Stubs! Dat ass * axe * is fine!!

To which, Andy replied:

Cavilsgrrrl:Less flirt, more kill.

Stuffing another roll, Luke smiled. He was learning Andy was one bloodthirsty chick when she was fired up. Also a wee bit possessive.

And he liked it.

He liked it a lot.

Another thing he was sorting out was that he must have been wrong about her and Carson hooking up, because while their dynamic playing together was intense due to them both being hardcore gaming nerds, they didn’t seem to share a lot of chemistry beyond that.

Carson and Jake, on the other hand, were obviously more than friends. For one thing, the two were extremely trigger-happy with the kissy-face emoji. For another, at one point about an hour into PT, when the team bedded down in the woods for the night, their mages shared a tent.

Luke tagged Andy’s arm. “What kind of fun you think they’re up to in there?”

She slanted a smirk his way. “The kinky magical kind.”

Snickering, they sent their avatars off to their own tents for the night.

Another virtual day dawned, another hour of PT flew by, and the team still hadn’t found the mysterious prophecy kid. But Luke had to admit he was having way more fun searching for the brat than shaking his ass at the Sin Spot. And this was largely because of the woman parked beside him.

A woman who had pizza sauce on the corner of her mouth, a seriously sagging ponytail, and the most beautifully vicious smile as she fired off a bolt that slammed into the head of one of the marauders His Tallness was fending off in the woods.

As the last of Zuron’s henchmen were dispatched, Carson called game for the night.

Which was a good thing considering Luke’s little savage appeared pretty tired. With a stretched-arm yawn, Andy glanced at the time on her PC and winced. “Damn, it’s almost one in the morning. Sorry for keeping you up so late.”

“I’m not.” He would have been up far later if he’d gone to the club. “It was fun.”

“Yeah?”
