“Oh God,” Alessia breathed. “Are they—”

Shots rang out around us, a kick of adrenaline blasting through me as I started barking orders at Jay. “Radio for backup,” I yelled, lowering a rousing Bella to her feet.

“What is—oh my God, is that gunfire?”

“Go, to the house, now.”

Unsheathing my weapon, I shoved her toward the house, grabbing Alessia as she stood there paralyzed with fear.

The van pulled to a stop and three masked men jumped out.

“Fuck, fuck,” I glanced back to Alessia. “Go,” I urged, the icy cold fingers of fear dragging down my spine.

“Take cover behind the SUV,” Jay yelled, firing back at the shooters as they approached the house. Bullets whizzed past my head, lodging themselves in the brick behind me.

“Draw their fire,” I hissed at Jay. He immediately fired another round of shots, and they answered.

Pressed close to the side of the SUV, I crept along the body, lifting my pistol, readying myself to—

Bang.

One of the guys went down but not before he fired off a shot that found its mark inside my shoulder.

Pain exploded through me as I grunted, the air sucked clean from my lungs.

“Tristan!” Alessia screamed, and I glanced back just in time to see another attacker grab her.

Fear like I’d never known slammed into me and I didn’t think, didn’t consider the consequences or the fact it might be a trap as I turned and ran toward them. Alessia’s eyes widened, her body going deathly still in the attacker’s grasp, as he raised the barrel of his gun pressed to her temple.

I ground to a halt, dropping my arm, my hand holding my gun. “Don’t—”

Something slammed into the back of my head and darkness embraced me.

* * *

I woketo a heavy bass drum in my skull.

“What the—”

Images flooded me. The masked gunmen jumping out of the speeding van. Alessia wide eyed and trembling as that fucker pressed his gun to her head.

“Tristan?”

Her voice sank into me, filling me with bittersweet relief. She was okay. Alessia was safe and okay…

But where the fuck was here?

Bracing my hand against my head, I attempted to sit up, groaning in agony as pain ripped through my shoulder.

“Shh.” Soft hands touched my face. “Try not to move.”

“Principessa?”

“I’m here,” she breathed from somewhere in the dark. “I’m here and I’m okay.”

My eyes shuttered as I inhaled a sharp breath. My body felt wrecked, fiery pain lancing my shoulder and radiating down my arm.

“How long was out?”
