“What are they—”

He silenced me with a hard look and finger to his mouth.

Avoiding me and treating me like a child.

My heart sank.

He regretted what had happened between us, that much was obvious. And I didn’t for a second doubt that when—if—we made it out of this, he would order me to never speak about it again.

But regardless of how he felt about it, it would always mean something to me.

Even if I meant nothing to him.

When I glanced back, he wore a grim expression. “We need to move. Now.”

“They’ve found us.”

“Not yet but they’re getting closer. We can circle around them and beat them back to the warehouse. I can find somewhere to leave you and—”

“I’m coming.”

“Alessia, be reasonable. I need to find a cell phone and some transport. I can’t do that if I’m worrying about you.”

“Fine.”

“Please, don’t make this any harder than it needs to be. This is our chance. Unless you want to spend the night out here like sitting ducks.”

“I’ll follow your instructions.” I conceded.

He was right, I didn’t want to stay here a second longer. And I certainly didn’t want to spend the night here.

But I didn’t want to go out there either.

“I’m scared,” I admitted.

Tristan lifted his hand and I thought he might reach for me but he didn’t.

And it spoke volumes.

He was building a wall around his heart and whatever had been building between us was gone. He would protect me, kill our enemy without hesitation; he would die for me if it came down to it. But Tristan wouldn’t fight for me.

He wouldn’t fight for us.

“Put this in your pocket.” He handed me a bottle of water, and I slipped it into one of his jacket pockets.

“We move quickly and silently. You stay behind me at all times, unless I say run, in which case, you run. Do you understand?”

I nodded.

“We’re going to get as close to the warehouse as we can and try and scope out how many of them there are.”

Another nod.

“I need you to stay light on your feet, watching where you’re treading, and keep your eyes and ears open. First sign of gunfire you take cover, okay?”

“Okay.”

“I know it’s scary, I know we don’t have a better plan but we can do this. You can do this.”
