PROLOGUE

MASON

Hot Dog Tuesdaywas usually one of my favorite days of the week. Some of the guys from the team stayed in a house just off campus and grilled out. It wasn’t a whole team thing. It was invite only—a few select players who were more like brothers than teammates.

I loved my team—the Lakeshore U Lakers—but I loved these guys the most.

Today was different, though.

Today Austin’s little sister Aurora and her friend had joined us.Crashed more like,I quashed the thought as I glared over at Rory’s friend Harper.

Blonde. Slim. Annoyingly pretty. She’d strolled into the yard like she fucking owned the place, sitting with us and talking hockey like she knew everything about it.

So her old man was a big deal back in the day. Didn’t mean shit. She was a puck bunny through and through, all too happy to use her connections to bag a Laker.

And I was so over that shit.

“How was your day?” Austin asked his sister.

“It was fine.”

“Don’t be shy, Rory,” Harper simpered. “Tell him about your big news.”

“W-what?” Everyone stared at Rory as she turned firetruck red.

“Yeah, shortcake, why don’t you tell us all your big news.” Noah’s eyes twinkled with interest. The guy was so fucking obvious despite insisting he wasn’t interested.

“It was nothing,” she said, ducking her head.

“Oh, come on,” he teased, “don’t be shy.”

“Aurora has a date,” Harper blurted. “Well, she will when we track the coffee shop cutie down and tell him she would love to go out with him.” She clapped her hands together like a proud parent, and I had to refrain from groaning at her theatrics.

“Harper,” Rory hissed. “It’s not… it wasn’t…”

“Big whoop,” I mumbled. “Can we eat now?”

“You don’t have to be so rude,” blondie snapped at me, and my eyes narrowed.

“Sorry, who the fuck are you again?”

“I’m Aurora’s friend, and you’re an asshole, Mason Steele.”

So she knew me—no big surprise there. The bunnies made a habit of learning all the important things. Name. Height. Hockey stats… Dick size.

“Friend, sure,” I scoffed. “Because we all want a friend who sells us out to our brother and his friends. Way to go, blondie.” I turned my attention to Austin. “Hit me up with one of those dogs. I’m starving.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Harper smile sadly at Rory. “Aurora, I didn’t— I have a habit of getting over-invested. I’m sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable.”

“Relax, Rory’s fine, right?” Austin slung his arm around his sister’s shoulder. “You are okay, right?”

“I’m fine,” she said.

“Good.” He turned his attention back on Harper, and I saw the lust there. He wanted her.

Fucking dog.

“You hungry?”
