I tried to rein myself in. To beless. But when you’d spent most of your childhood having to fight for every scrap of attention you could get, it was hard to break the habit of a lifetime.
“What do you think, Harper?”
“Sorry, what?” I blinked over at Aurora.
“Are you okay?” she asked, and I forced a smile.
“I’m fine. Can I get you some drinks?”
“Uh, sure.” She studied me, and I smiled wider.
Thankfully Ella and Dayna gave me their drink orders, oblivious to the strange tension between us, so she added, “Just a water, please.”
“Coming right up.”
I got their drink order and returned right as Aurora was whispering something to her friends.
“Oh my God,” Ella said. “Good for you, babe. I’m so freaking happy for you.”
“What’s going on?”
“Rory was just telling us that Noah gave her multiple—”
“Ella!” Rory blushed, clapping her hand over Ella’s face. “Oh look, the drinks are here. Thanks.”
“Come on, babe.” Ella peeled her fingers away, laughing. “We’re all friends. And I’m sure Harper wouldn’t mind living vicariously through you since she wanted to take Noah’s stick for a spin.”
I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me whole. My face must have said it all because Dayna offered me a sympathetic smile.
“Ignore her, Harper. Ella talks too much after a drink or two.”
“What? I was joking.” Ella’s expression dropped. “It was a joke. You know that, right, babe?”
“Sure.” I smiled. “It’s all good. Rory knows how happy I am for her and Noah.”
And I was.
She deserved nothing but good things.
I’d never wanted to date Noah; I’d wanted to sleep with him. There was a difference.
“I’d better go check on my tables,” I said. “But if you need anything, just holler.”
Aurora watched me carefully.
A little too carefully.
I gave her a small, forced smile and headed for one of my tables. She was my first friend at Lakeshore U—my only friend, really.
Now she was in love.
She’d found her person.
