Mom, on the other hand, was another story. She’d called twice and texted three times. I hadn’t wanted to talk to her, but I finally picked up when she called a third time.

“Thank God,” she said. “I’ve been worried.”

“Come on, Mom. You know I can deal with a little flare-up.”

“I know, but I still worry. You’re my baby, Harper. It’s my job to worry.”

Could have fooled me.

“Are you drinking enough water?” she asked. “You need to—”

“Mom, I’m fine.”

“Okay, sorry. I trust you, sweetheart. Have you seen your father yet?”

“Nope.”

“Oh.” She hesitated. “I thought he might have reached out now he’s on campus.”

“Really? Because I’m not surprised in the least.”

“Harper, that isn’t—”

“Mom, come on. I can’t remember the last actual conversation I had with him. He didn’t even make my leaving dinner.”

Mom had booked a nice restaurant downtown, and I’d stupidly humored her.

“He’s just—”

“Stop. God, Mom. Just stop.” Frustration coated my voice. “He doesn’t care. He’s never cared. It’s time we both accept that. Dad didn’t come to LU to try and repair our relationship. He came to reunite with his one true love. Hockey.”

“There’s still time, sweetheart. I think if the two of you just spent some time together—”

“No, Mom. I’m done. I am so done.”

“Harper,” she gasped as if somehow, I was in the wrong here.

“I gotta go. My stomach is grumbling.”

“Harper, please—”

I hung up. Because I couldn’t do it, I couldn’t listen to her bullshit for a second longer.

Mom was never going to change, just like he was never going to change.

My parents were and would forever be a lost cause. It was time to accept that and move on.

If only it were that easy.

Pushing all thoughts of my parents down, I opened Instagram and scrolled through the feed. I mostly followed hockey players and sports channels, along with the odd digestive health guru and book blogger. But it wasn’t any of their profiles that caught my eye. It was the suggested profiles.

One in particular.

Coach Dixon LU Lakers.

My dad had his own profile.

I shouldn’t have looked, but I couldn’t help myself, clicking the link and waiting for his posts to load.
