I didn’t have the time or energy for that.

And she deserved more than a guy who was already pulled in too many different directions.

So I told her it was a mistake.

Told her thatshewas a mistake.

One I wouldn’t make again.

The hurt in her eyes had almost gutted me. But it was for the best. It could never work. I wasn’t looking for a girlfriend, and she clearly couldn’t do the casual thing without catching feelings.

We were a disaster waiting to happen, and I wanted to save her from the wreckage—even if she hated me for it.

“She wasn’t in class again,” Noah added, drilling holes into the side of my face.

I let out a heavy sigh. “If you’ve got something to say, Holden, just say it.”

“Who, me?” He smirked. “I don’t have anything to say.”

“You’re an ass.”

“Takes one to know one.”

I tsked, pulling off my jersey. The last thing I needed was Noah running his mouth and it getting back to Coach Dixon that I’d been with his daughter last night.

He came over, getting in my space. “Sorry, I’m just busting your balls.”

“Yeah, well, I’d appreciate it if you didn’t.”

“Mase, come on, I was only joking.”

“Joking about what?” Abel asked as he swaggered past. Even his walk made me want to lay him out.

“Fuck off, we weren’t talking to you,” Noah gritted out.

Bro looked like a fucking idiot half-naked, dick almost hanging out of his hockey pants, but his expression was icy cold.

“Relax, Holden. We’re all friends. You got the girl, didn’t you? Rory seems like—”

“Don’t fucking say her name.” He lunged for Abel, but I grabbed him before he could make contact.

“Easy. You don’t want Coach to see this.”

“Tell him to stay the fuck out of my way then.” Noah shouldered past Abel leaving me to deal with the smug fucker.

“Was it something I said?” He grinned.

“Back the fuck off, Adams. He already gave you one black eye. The next time you might not be so lucky.”

“Is that a threat?” His eyes narrowed.

I leaned in close and drawled. “That’s a fucking promise.”

“Yeah, whatever, asshole.” He shoved past me.

“We good here?”

I wasn’t surprised to find Aiden watching me. Our captain, although he mostly kept to himself, made sure to know what was going on with his team.
