“Watch it,” Mason growled, stepping back to put some space between us.

“Crap, sorry. I didn’t see—”

He let out an exasperated breath and pinned me with a dark look that sent a shiver racing down my spine. “You should pay more attention next time.”

“I didn’t mean it. I didn’t—”

“Not interested,” he said, brushing past me.

His cold shoulder stung. But what did I really expect?

Mason had made no effort to hide his disdain for me. Ever since I started hanging out with Aurora, he’d made it clear that he didn’t like me.

I could handle that. I wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea. What I couldn’t handle, though, was the fact he looked at me like he had me all figured out.

Mason Steele thought I was a puck bunny. He thought I pretended to love hockey to get close to the team. To score with any hockey player I could.

But it wasn’t like that.

Hockey was in my blood.

It was a part of me.

It was the thing I loved more than anything.

And also the thing I hated most.

CHAPTER3

MASON

I nursed my drink, watching the flatscreen in the corner of the room.

“What are you doing all the way over here?” Noah asked.

“Just watching the highlights.”

“Is everything okay?” His eyes dropped to the glass in my hand. “You seem tense.”

“I’m always fucking tense.”

“Okay.” His mouth twitched. “You seem more tense than usual.”

“I’m fine.” I drained my glass and waved it toward the bartender. He gave me an understanding nod and brought me over a new drink.

“Is that a good idea? You know Coach’s rule.”

“I know my limits.”

“Listen, did something happen with you and Harper—”

“The fuck?” I balked at the mention of her name.

“You keep looking at her, and I saw the two of you talking Friday night.”

“Correction, she was talkingatme.”

“And?”
