“There isn’t. But she still deserves to know we’re done.”

“Fucking hell, she’s already made you soft.”

“Who, Jenni?” I frowned.

“No, Harper, you idiot.”

“Look, I’m just trying to do the right thing here. Make sure that no one can mess this up before it’s even gotten started.”

“I get it,” Noah said. “But let me ask you one thing. Does she know?”

“No, that’s why I need to tell her.”

“Not Jenni, asshole.” He rolled his eyes. “Harper. Does Harper know about Jenni?”

“There’s nothing to know.” My brows pinched as I rubbed the back of my neck, feeling really fucking tense all of a sudden.

“You’re either a really clueless idiot, Mase, or you’re a really fucking clueless idiot. You can’t start a relationship by lying to your girl.”

“I’m not lying. There’s nothing to tell.”

“I know you’re not that fucking stupid.”

“Look, if I tell her about Jenni, it might freak her out. And things are good, Holden. Really fucking good. I don’t want to ruin that.”

“At the end of the day, it’s your call,” he said. “But I’m going to go on record and say I think this is a bad idea.”

He didn’t know what he was talking about. Which was fucking ironic since he had a similar situation with his regular hook-up before he and Rory went official.

“It’ll be fine,” I said, nixing the seed of doubt he’d planted.

“I hope so, hotshot.” He smirked. “For your sake.”

Harper: Mom hasn’t heard from him. He does this sometimes when he’s fallen off the wagon.

Mason: Shit, okay. Coach Tucker didn’t seem too concerned but if he doesn’t show in the morning, I’ll talk to him.

Harper: Okay…

Mason: Are you okay?

Harper: I’d rather my father wasn’t an alcoholic and neglectful bastard but here we are.

Mason: I’m sorry. I’ll make you feel better later.

Harper: Oh yeah, and how do you intend on doing that?

Mason: I can think of a few ways.

Guilt snaked through me as I glanced up just in time to see Jenni enter the bar. We had a place on the edge of town we hung out at sometimes, so it made sense to meet her here.

Mason: I gotta go. But I’ll text later.

Harper: Okay. I’m meeting some friends now but I’m free tonight. xo

Jenni’s face lit up when she spotted me, and I felt like a giant asshole. I guess since Harper, I saw things in a whole new light because Jenni was looking at me the way Harper looked at me.
