“Well, we need to head home,” I said, more than ready to end this little family reunion. “Mom is expecting us.”

“Of course. Thank you for letting me stay and have dinner with you.”

“Anytime, Mr. Steele. It was nice to meet you.”

“You too, Harper. Mason, Son.” He held out his hand and I stared at it.

“Mason,” Harper whispered, giving me another little nudge. I grabbed it and shook it.

“Thank you, Mase, for everything.” My brows furrowed at his strange choice of words but before I could ask what he meant, he went to Scottie and crouched down. “And I’ll see you soon, okay?”

“Okay, Dad.”

“Be good for your mom and brother.”

“And Harper,” Scottie added, surprising the shit out of me. “She’s part of my family too now.”

Harper’s breath caught and she looked up at me, a hundred questions glittering in her eyes.

I lifted my shoulders in a small shrug and whispered, “He has a point.”

“Mason,” she let out a nervous laugh.

“Scottie speaks facts, you know that.”

“But—”

“No buts, blondie.” I leaned down, stealing a kiss, not giving a single fuck that my old man and brother were watching. “The Steele brothers have decided,” I whispered. “We want to keep you.”

CHAPTER30

HARPER

My father was still MIA.According to my mom, he hadn’t been home, but he had texted her. No doubt it was the usual excuses.

He needed some space.

Needed time to get his head on straight.

He’d come back stronger. Ready to turn things around.

But it was always empty promises.

It wasn’t unusual for him to disappear over the years when his demons, his regrets, got too much to bear. But part of me was surprised he was willing to risk his job with the team.

“Oh, Harper, I didn’t see you there.” Natalie came into the kitchen, making a beeline for the refrigerator.

“I’ll be out of your way in a second,” I said.

“You don’t have to rush off.”

I frowned. That was new.

“Look, I’m sorry, okay? I’ve been a total bitch to you since the beginning of the semester.”

“I guess we’re doing this,” I murmured, leaning back against the counter, staring at her. Waiting. Because if she thought I was going to make this easy on her. She was wrong.

“It’s my issue, not yours.”
