“I see. Well, I really should get back inside.” She went to double back, but I couldn’t help but call after her.
“Harper?”
“Yeah?”
“What the fuck are you doing here?”
The blood drained from her face. “I had no idea your brother would be attending a group here if that’s what you’re—”
“I’m not. Shit, you just threw me for a loop. You’re here. Working with my brother. It’s literally the last thing I expected to see.”
“Sorry to disappoint you. I only started volunteering here this week.”
What were the odds?
“Do you think you can get moved to a different group?”
Her expression dropped, the temperature turning subzero between us.
“Wow,” she said. “I knew you were an asshole; I didn’t realize—”
“Harper?” Scottie yelled. “I need help with—”
“Coming.” She didn’t hesitate, shooting me one last death glare before taking off to help my brother tidy his section.
Unease trickled through me as I watched them together. Scottie responded positively to her, following her directions and hanging on her every word.
It was obvious the kid had a crush on her.
Fuck my life.
But he’d get over it. Because there was no way in hell I could do this on the regular.

HARPER
“What the fuckare you doing here?”
I replayed Mason’s words over in my head as I helped Scottie clean up.
It had sounded more like an accusation than a question. But it wouldn’t surprise me if the arrogant asshole thought I’d manipulated my way into the volunteering gig at the center to insert myself into his life.
God, he really was something.
“So, you know my brother?” Scottie asked, not making eye contact as he meticulously wiped down the counter.
He was a sweet kid—a head of floppy brown hair that fell into his eyes.
Eyes I now realized belonged to his older brother.
When we’d met briefly yesterday, he’d told me his name was Sam. No one had questioned it, so neither had I.
Imagine my surprise when Mason called him Scottie and not Sam.
“We have some mutual friends, yeah.”
