It was kind of embarrassing. But I guess he was excited about his first game with the team.

“You know Rory told me you went to meet her yesterday.”

“I didn’t go to meet her. I went to clear the air.”

“Clear the air. Okay,Dr. Phil,” Noah snorted, and I flipped him off.

“You’re an asshole.”

“And you’re in denial. You”—he jabbed his finger at me—“want her. And I’d put money on her being in your bed by the end of the month.”

Considering the end of the month was Monday, I felt pretty confident when I said, “Never going to happen. She’s not my—”

“Type, yeah. You know, I remember saying exactly the same thing once. Now, look at me.” He pulled out his cell phone and thrust it in my face.

“What the fuck is that?”

“We got matching hoodies.”

“You got…” I stared at the selfie of him and Rory grinning at the camera in their ridiculously matching outfits. “The Bertram to her Price. What the fuck is a Bertram?”

“Rory’s favorite Austen character.”

“You’re reading Austen now?” I snorted.

“Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.” Noah dropped his cell back in his bag and sat down to lace up his skates. “We could all learn a thing or two from Austen’s top-tier fictional men.”

“Have you heard this shit?” I asked Austin and Connor.

“It’s a phase,” Austin grumbled. “It’ll pass.”

“You’re just—”

“Okay, ladies, look alive.” Coach Tucker stepped into the fray. “We need to be out on the ice in five. Aiden, son, you ready?”

“Damn straight, Coach.”

“Glad to hear it. I want you to go out there and play the game I know you all can without inciting a brawl before the puck drops.” He pinned Noah and Austin with a dark look.

“Don’t look at me,” Austin said. “I learned my lesson when I had to sit on the bench last game.”

“Not the point, Hart, and you know it.” Coach Tucker glowered. “The Huskies lost a lot of senior players last season, so we should have the upper hand. But don’t take anything for granted out there. Now get in here. Lakers on three.”

We all joined Coach in the huddle, standing shoulder to shoulder with our teammates asLakersechoed through the locker room like a battle cry. He wasn’t one for big motivational speeches; he trusted us to know our roles and get the job done. But Coach Dixon seemingly had other ideas.

“Mind if I say a few words, Joe?”

“Go for it.” Coach Tucker stepped back, giving Coach D the floor.

“It’s only the beginning of the season,” he said. “But if you want to be the best, you have to go out there and play your best… Every. Damn. Time. Mason, son.”

“Yes, sir?”

“Don’t be afraid to go after the shot. Remember what we worked on this week. As for the rest of you, use him. He’s an untapped resource on the ice.”

Noah caught my eye and arched his brow, barely containing his shit-eating grin. Asshole. He would never let me hear the end of this.

“Okay, James, thank you for that.” Coach Tucker clapped him on the shoulder. “We should let the guys get out on the ice.”
