“But we have to get the giant pancake stack,” Scottie said. “We always get it.”

“You can still get it, buddy. I’m not that hungry, is all.”

“But it’s pancake Sunday.”

“Scottie, bud, leave it.”

“But—”

“If Harper wants a boring fruit salad, then that’s her loss. More pancakes for me and you.” He winked, and it seemed to pacify Scottie.

“Welcome to The Stack”—the woman appeared—“what can I get y’all?”

Mason scanned the menu. “We’ll take a mega stack with bacon and two Oreo milkshakes, please.”

“And for you, doll?”

“I’ll take the granola and fruit salad, please, and a water.”

“Don’t get many requests for granola and fruit salad around these parts,” she chuckled as she noted it down. “I’ll be right back with your drinks.”

“I hate granola,” Scottie said with disgust.

“Oh, I don’t know. It’s not so bad with a little yogurt.”

He made a hacking sound, and Mason laughed. “Scottie has an aversion to most dairy-based products.”

“Chocolate?” I arched a brow.

“Except chocolate. But milk, cream, butter, it’s all a big no-no. Something to do with the texture.”

“But the filling in Oreos—”

“Is delicious,” Scottie chimed.

“Right. Got it.”

“You couldn’t have the eggs?” Mason asked.

“I could have, but places like this don’t tend to worry about cross-contamination. It isn’t worth the risk.”

“Must suck. I couldn’t live without carbs.”

“You get used to it.”

“What’s cross-tamination?”

“Cross-contamination is when things are exposed to each other when they shouldn’t be. So like a vegetarian being served a meal that was prepared around meat. That would be cross-contamination.”

“Why does it matter?”

I looked at Mason, and he shrugged.

Well, okay then.

“Because for some people, they might not be able to eat certain things, or it could make them sick.”

“Like what?”
