I went with brute force, yanking open the door and catching her body before she tumbled out.

“M-Mase?” she murmured.

“Yeah, blondie, it’s me. I got you.” I managed to slide my arm under her knees and pick her up, saying a silent fucking prayer that none of the neighbors saw me carrying a barely conscious girl into my house.

At least Scottie was present and accounted for. He’d be my witness to my attempt at chivalry—and not kidnap—if the local rumor mill started up.

“Get the door, buddy.” I dangled my keys for him, and he snatched them off my finger, jamming them into the door.

“She can sleep in my bed.”

Nice try.My lips twitched.

“Let’s put her in my room.”

“But—”

“I’m going to need you to help me, okay?”

Scottie nodded, his eyes flicking between Harper’s lifeless body and the bag still in his hand. He shadowed me down the hall and up the stairs to my room, standing vigil as I laid her down.

Her eyes flickered open, and something inside me tumbled. “This is so embarrassing,” she croaked. “Where are we?”

“My house,” Scottie piped up.

“You brought me to… wow, okay.” She tried to sit up but flopped down in a breathless heap.

“We got you some things.” I beckoned Scottie over, and he started unpacking the bag. “Activated charcoal, ginger tea, turmeric capsules, probiotics, and—”

Harper’s fingers curled around my arm, my eyes snapping to her. “You did all that… for me?”

“Well, yeah. Dr. Google said—”

“Dr. Google?”

“Yeah, you were practically passed out, and I didn’t know what to do, so I went online. Did I get it wrong?”

“No.” Harper’s soft laughter filled my childhood bedroom. I’d never had a girl in here before, not that I would ever tell her that.

“I just can’t believe you, Mason Steele, did that for me.”

“Yeah, well, don’t let it go to your head. Scottie would never have let me live it down if I’d just left you there.”

“Harper.” The boy in question stepped forward.

“Hi, buddy. I’m really sorry you had to see me like this.”

“Are you going to die?”

“No.No! I’ll be fine once the symptoms wear off. I promise.”

“Hey, bud. Can you go and get Harper a bottle of water out of the refrigerator, please?”

“Yeah, okay.”

The second he left the room, Harper turned her weary gaze on me. “I am so sorry. I didn’t think—”

“Why’d you do it?”
