“But most of your travelers are sent out here, are they not?”

“Yes, they are.”

“Yet, I am not.”

“No, you are not.”

“Again, why?”

He turns his focus to the light, the one that indicates where we need to stop. “Because you are different. I knew it from the moment I saw you.”

“I want you to know something. I’m in love with someone else.” He stands there, unmoving as he stares at me, not saying anything, until his eyes shift back to the shadows.

“Death,” he states.

“Yes,” I reply, nodding my head.

“Sometimes love can be tricky. This Death you are in love with, does he feel the same way?” I turn and look back at the shadow as well. His dark hair is tied back, silver gaze firmly on me—what I wouldn’t give to touch him.

“I think he does, but it’s complicated.” I give a shrug.

“All the best loves are,” he utters. “Can I see your power?” he asks. “Peachies are interested in you, and I would like to know what type of power you hold. To my knowledge, most witches hold the power of a single element.”

“I hold all,” I tell him.

“I would still like to know. Can you show me?”

I bite my bottom lip before answering, “I can borrow power by touching someone.”

“Borrow?” he asks, lifting a brow.

“Yes,” I say as I step closer to him. I lift my hand but don’t reach for him. He glances at me curiously. “Can I touch you?”

“Yes, you may.” With his permission, I lift my hand and lay it on his arm. The minute I find his bare skin, I feel the buzz coming from him.

Whatpower.

What absolute breathtaking power he holds.

I feel myself siphoning before I can stop myself. I know my eyes are changing color because the shock on his face tells me as he stares at me in awe. I manage to tear my hand away, and then I fall to the ground from the effort. Maxilliam reaches to help me to stand, but I pull him down with me.

“You are strong,” I whisper as I mold myself to him. The high from his power is heady, overwhelming my senses. “I can feel what you feel. How beautiful is that?” I press my head into his chest, and he gently strokes my hair.

“Are you okay?”

I look up at him through my lashes and smile. “You are really pretty. Did you know that? All that chiseled jaw and eyes as blue as the sky. I bet you get a lot of female attention.”

“Not from those I want it from.”

His name is called, but neither of us pays any attention. We can’t seem to stop staring at each other, our eyes roving over each other’s faces in uninhibited fascination.

“Can I kiss you?” he asks on a low breath. I feel the question flowing through me before I answer with little thought.

I offer him a small smile and simply nod before he leans down, and his lips dance across mine. He tastes of apples and something a little darker, an edge that has me instantly craving more. His tongue slides across my lips before I open my mouth and let it move between mine with a delicately dominant stroke. He kisses me with a force I can’t comprehend, or maybe I’m just too high to fully work it out. One thing I know is that this kiss rivals Death's kiss, which pains me a little.

Reaching up, I touch his shoulder, slide my hand to the nape of his neck, and give him back his power. When I feel it has all slithered away, I break the kiss, turning my head to the side as I lie still in his lap. When I open my eyes, I see Levy standing there with half the village watching us.

Her eyes flicker between colors, but I choose not to think about it too much and glance back to Maxilliam. “Your people are here.”
