He stumbles, but quickly rights himself. “How did you do that?” he asks, looking around. “And why are you covered in blackness?” I glance down at myself.

“What blackness?”

“It pours from you. It’s eating away at you.” He steps forward, and I look to the ground and halt him from coming any closer to me.

“You can stay and watch the show if you’d like,” I offer. "Did you know all my life we were slaves to them?” I point to the house. “I hated them. How could we let them dominate us when I knew I was stronger than them?”

“You are indeed stronger,” Bronik agrees.

“I know. But not strong enough to not get trapped… not once but twice,” I say, shaking my head. “Did you know my father before he was the King of Hell?” I ask Bronik. He only nods. “What about Grim? Did he know him?”

“Yes, the Angel of Death and the King of Hell are old friends, Talia.”

Yeah, I gathered as much.

“I’ve been contemplating how I will kill all the vampires. Sitting in that house, they are probably forming a plan.” I glance back to Cinitta. “Fire, maybe?” I ask Bronik. “That kills a vampire, right?”

“It does,” he confirms.

“What about loss of power?” I smile. “Do you think that from here, I could take their power?”

“No, you have to be touching them.”

“They are connected, though, right? What if I got the one who made them all and took his power? Would that then destroy them?”

Bronik is quiet for a long time before he decides it’s probably best not to answer me.

“That’s okay, fire it is.” I reach back and offer Cinitta my hand. Through her fire, she grips mine, and I take some of her power. She falters just a bit as I feel it leaving her body and coming to me. I suck it until a large fireball is formed in front of me. It’s so large it lights up the whole area, and you would think it’s daytime.

I lock eyes with Bronik. “They said to rule, I had to be cruel. I didn’t believe them. But I do now.” I let the fireball go at the same time I release Cinitta’s arm. The burning orb flies through house after house, incinerating them. When it finally hits the last house, it evaporates, and I grin in the light of the inferno in front of us.

All these beautiful houses that once were admired from afar are now being burned to the ground.

“You don’t have to be cruel,” Bronik says.

“Yes, I do. Otherwise, what happened will continue to happen,” I say as vampires leave their nests and gather in a group. All eyes lock on me, and I wave a hand, setting Bronik free.

He leaves without saying goodbye.

Asshole.

I turn around to speak to Cinitta and stare in surprise as Bronik reappears, wraps his arms around her, and disappears again.

That’s okay. I didn’t need them in order to destroy the vampires anyway.

The first vampire walks up to me, thinking he has a chance.

He doesn’t.

He sneers.

His clothes smell like fire, and I can’t help but smirk.

“Witch,” he seethes. “You will pay with your life. But first…” I let him get so close that his fangs touch my neck, but not enough to drink, just graze, before I freeze him. Then I pull away and get close to his ear. “Vampire, you will be first.” My hand lands on his chest, and I suck the powerful energy he has right from his body. He turns to ash as he dies on the ground.

And the high that fills me is so, so beautiful.

I start walking and see myself as if I am looking down from above.
