“We can’t be sure,” I reply.

“You don’t have to defend her any longer. We know it’s her.”

“She may be the only one to help us. Have you thought of that?” I ask. “She has been to the other world. I’m guessing that’s where these things are from. She may know what to do with them or even how to kill them.”

John simply stares at me, and I know he wants to say something else, but he bites his tongue and simply nods his head before he picks up one of our daughters and starts walking. I follow close behind, not saying a word.

I glance back at Tanya and see the dread filling her eyes. She also knows who did this. We both do. We just didn’t actually think she would go through with it. Talia is not a cruel person. If anything, she is soft and forgiving and is always looking out for other people. I remember a time when it physically pained her to take someone else’s life. And yet here I am, sure she has taken many. Granted, they were probably already dead, seeing as how they were vampires, but still, they were considered living beings on this plane.

“What else will she do?” Tanya asks me quietly as Melvon goes down to one house and stops in front of it. He comes back with a band and slides it on his wrist.

“It was my mother’s. That was my house.” He nods to the rubble, and Tanya leans her head on his shoulder. “She died many, many years ago. But I always kept this.” He holds up his wrist. “Your sister has caused a lot of death and destruction,” he says.

Speaking of Death.

“Do you thinkheknows?” I ask Tanya.

“I don’t know.” She shrugs, knowing who I am speaking about.

Death is always there for her, but I wonder if that has altered now.

Max’s death has changed her, and as I look around, I’m not sure it’s for the best.

“Rest, my love. You need to rest.” John takes the baby from my arms and nods for me to sit. We are close now to the witches, but as I look down, I see my swollen feet.

Melvon carries Tanya when she gets too sore, but I just keep walking. John has everyone to protect, so he doesn’t need to worry about me as well.

“We’re close,” I tell him.

“We’ve seen no sign of that thing, so rest for a bit. I’ll stand guard.” He leans down and kisses my head. I remove my shoes and see a pool of blood in one, so I grab the bottle of water and start washing the cuts.

“She will be okay, though, right?” Tanya asks. I look over and see her biting her nails.

“What do you mean?”

“She will still be our sister. We still love her, no matter what she does.”

I think about her words. Yes, we will always love her, but some things you can’t come back from.

“Your opinion of her has changed. I want to say it’s from when she saved your baby, but I have a feeling it happened when you found out who her father is.”

“I still love her,” I say. “That will never change. And one day, when you have kids, you will understand when I say she isn’t my first priority anymore… my kids are.” Tanya looks away. “What? What is it?”

“I won’t have kids, Tatiana. Vampires don’t reproduce.”

“I’m sorry, I wasn’t thinking.”

“That’s okay. It seems to be going around a lot lately.”

“Witches.” I turn to see Valefar, dressed impeccably as always, with a sinister smile attached to his lips. “It seems your sister is causing quite the stir in Hell.” He waggles his brows. “Not that I’m not happy, but it’s making me look bad, you know.”

“Why are you here?” I ask him.

“Your sister has a throne now. Did you know?” I glance at Tanya, confused, before I look back to Valefar. “She is meant to be queen. It’s her destiny. But a good queen is what she should’ve been, not what she is right now.”

“And what is she right now?” I ask. His red eyes lock on mine.
