It felt like things were falling into a routine again, after all she’d been through.

“It’s nice here,” she had confessed. “Logan is much sweeter than he shows outwardly.”

“Yeah, Daniel’s the same. A teddy bear when it’s just him and I. A sexy one.” Harper smirked.

Same-same.

“Have you talked? About the relationship?” Harper asked.

Emma had frowned and shaken her head. “You know he’s messed up about his ex. I am not sure he has the ability to let anyone else in. I’m leaving next weekend.”

“That’s good. When he misses you, he will figure it out.”

What if he didn’t?

Falling for Logan had shifted her in a way Emma hadn’t expected. For years, she’d been trying to figure out what kind of man she would fit with.

She fit with Logan.

Regardless of what he did.

And she hadn’t thought this through because she was pretty sure he had no plans for their relationship to be anything more.

But as his kiss turned deeper and his arms tightened around her, for the first time, Emma wondered.

What if?

––––––––

LATER THAT NIGHT, THEYsat in the hot tub outside under the stars. They were both quiet.

Contemplative.

“Tell me what you’re thinking,” Logan said.

“No.”

Emma could’ve made something up, but tonight, something had shifted between them, and it would just feel like too big a lie.

Logan stared at her for a long moment across the hot tub, their legs caressing each other.

“Then I’ll tell you what I’m thinking,” he said.

“Don’t,” Emma replied, her eyes drifting behind him to the garden. If he said he wanted her to go home early, it would break her heart.

She wondered if that’s why he mentioned it this morning.

Then she decided the best way forward was to front foot it. Otherwise, it would feel like she was being kicked out. Dealing with his rejection would be harder.

“I was thinking I should go home. I’m feeling much better. They said a week, and I know we thought I’d stay for two, but it’s unnecessary. I’ll be fine on my own.”

“Your ankle isn’t fine,” Logan said, his eyes darkening.

“I can get friends back home to help,” Emma replied, daring to look at him, those dark eyes drilling into hers.

Was this the guilt? Did he believe he had to care for her, or did he want her to stay?

“Uber Eats. I won’t starve. I don’t have to commute as I work at home,” she added.
