Emma pretended she was asleep but prayed the tear that leaked out didn’t land on his arm.

He might be sorry, but people didn’t say things they didn’t mean.

Logan didn’t love her.

That was the cold, hard truth.

CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

Logan wiped the sweatoff his forehead with his gym towel and wandered down the hall to his bedroom. Emma stepped out and walked straight into him in the doorway.

“Woah. Where are you going?” he asked, taking in her jeans, shoes, and handbag, steadying her.

“Out,” she replied when Logan released her.

Emma pulled her phone out of her bag and checked the screen, then walked down the hallway, favoring her ankle.

He watched her.

Emma had never left the house without him. She didn’t even have a key.

Logan knew they needed to talk, but he’d gotten out of bed before she’d woken. He needed to apologize but was still concerned about the risk she may be pregnant.

His head, his heart, his fears all jumped up in a swirling ball of conflict and confusion. Hurting Emma was the last thing he wanted to do, but last night had been a reminder he was playing with fire having her here.

Logan didn’t want a relationship, but his feelings for Emma were blurring the lines.

It would never work, his reaction last night a perfect example.

He’d just hurt her over and over.

And if he didn’t hurt her, Emma would hold his heart in her hands with the potential to destroy him. He didn’t have the capacity to survive two heartbreaks.

At the end of the hall, Emma stopped and turned. He ran the towel over his forehead once more.

“I’m going to the pharmacy to take care of this ‘unwanted pregnancy’,” she added. “I’ll be back in fifteen minutes. Twenty max. I assume you’ll be here.”
