Wanting more.

It was only due to the fact she’d needed sleep and had to work the next day that she had left. Emma got the feeling, if they were both free, Logan would’ve been as keen as she was to stay in his hotel room with her for longer.

It was still a one-night stand for twenty-four hours.

Well, those were her rules anyway.

“I just didn’t sleep well.” Emma took another long sip of the tepid coffee. “Guess I’m stressed about the long weekend. My mother has been a nightmare lately.”

It wasn’t acompletelie. With Labor Day weekend approaching, Emma was not looking forward to spending that much time with her parents.

Harper knew about the issues with her mom. She’d had her own challenges, as many authors did, with people not believing it was possible to make a living from writing. Emma had shared some of the tense conversations with her friend over the years.

This weekend, both her parents were off rotation at the hospital, and her mother was making a big fuss. She’d already sent Emma messages saying what a shame it was she wasn’t married and didn’t have kids for Asa to play with.

Emma was thirty-one, not forty-one.

Jeez, Mom, give me a break.

“I don’t envy you. Moving across the world has its benefits.” Harper slid her hands into the back pockets of her jeans, then her eyes flew open, and she pulled out one of her hands and gripped Emma’s arm.

Mid sip, Emma choked on her coffee.

“Come to the Hamptons with us. Say you are writing or”—she waved her hand around—“whatever.”

Emma’s eyes flew open.

Was Harper serious?

She’d heard about the Dufort mansion in the Hamptons and seen photos from Harper’s wedding. It was an incredible property.

“It’s so beautiful there. I know, I know. Hanging out with three couples and two kids sounds boring to a single gal, but Olivia and Addy would love you joining us. We’ll make it fun, I promise.”

Emma didn’t doubt it would be.

She’d enjoyed the few days she’d spent with Harper and her new family. The Dufort men were hilarious and her sisters-in-law equally as nice and fun.

Emma wiped her mouth with the back of her hand. “And what about your husband? I’m sure he doesn’t want a straggler joining you.”

Harper gave her a naughty smile.

“You leave him to me. Daniel dragged me across the world to live so we have...an agreement.”

Emma laughed.

Could she do it? Skip the long family weekend and hang out with the Dufort’s?

In the Hamptons?

Was she insane? Itwasan incredible invitation she was unlikely to get again. That and she wouldn’t have to deal with her mother.

Emma would miss seeing Kevin, Jada, and Asa, but they lived in Chicago, and she could see them any time she liked.

“Well, as long as the house isn’t shitty. I’m fussy about my accommodations, you know,” Emma teased, knowing very well it was a kabillion-dollar property on the waterfront.

When you wrote about billionaires, you knew these things.

Authors just knew stuff.
