“Roger that,” replied Baxter, all levity gone from his tone of voice.

“Keep them safe, Bax.”

“We go down before they do.”

“Good man,” he said as he ended the call. “Okay, you motherfucker, let’s see what you’re made of.”

With that, Fletch floored the SUV and wove his way in and out of traffic, forcing the sedan to give up any sort of subterfuge just to keep up with him. He placed a call to a friend at MI-5, the UK’s security agency charged with protecting those within the UK from threats occurring there, and reported he was being followed by what he believed to be some kind of hostile in a black sedan.

It didn’t take long for two cars with flashing blue lights to force the sedan to the side of the road. Fletch got off at the next exit and then right back on the highway going the opposite direction. He slowed, as did everyone else, as they passed the sedan and the two police vehicles. The other drivers were just rubbernecking—Fletch wanted to get a good look at who had been tailing him. Once he knew who, it would be easier to tell who their target was. As he drove slowly by, he used his cell phone to take pictures. He didn’t recognize them, but he was sure Carter’s facial recognition program could put names to those faces.

CHAPTER10

CLAIRE

She wasn’t sure what Fletch said to Joe Baxter, but whatever it was, wasn’t good. The instant the call ended, Bax started issuing commands and men started making sure they had plenty of ammo and guns before they headed out. Baxter tossed Carter a set of keys.

“If you or the boys upstairs see anyone who isn’t us, you get everybody here at the cottage into that SUV and head for the safehouse in Normandy. Make sure you keep the ladies safe.”

Carter nodded. “Fletch hear something?”

“No, he picked up a tail. He caused them some trouble with the police and is sending me pictures for you to run through your program.”

“Will do,” Carter said as Baxter joined the others to set up a perimeter patrol. “Ladies, if I could get you to sit on that couch in front of the fireplace, that would be the safest and easiest spot for us to get you under cover if a firefight breaks out.”

“Cover us with what?” asked Claire pointedly.

“With whatever it takes to keep you ladies safe.”

“As in your bodies?” gulped Mia.

“As in.”

“I’m not comfortable with that,” said Claire. “Give us our own guns and if it comes down to a fight, we’ll pitch in and help.”

“That’s not happening. No way would the boss ever sanction that.”

“I don’t give a damn what Fletch would sanction. This is my cottage and I have the final say so.”

Carter grinned at her. “I can’t wait until you and Fletch really tangle. I’m going to sell tickets and make a fortune. The fact is, Claire, the boss hits a lot harder than you do. Let’s just hope it doesn’t come to that, but if it does, know that every man in this unit will die before he lets something happen to you, so if trouble comes, just do as we ask.”

He turned and began walking around to the doors in the cottage, checking to ensure they were all locked.

“Did I understand him to say that those men will die trying to save us?”

“Yes, which is such bullshit…”

“He’s right.” Claire stared at her incredulously. “Don’t give me that look. You are not Wonder Woman and I’m sure as hell not Bat Girl.”

“No, you would be Kendra Saunders or Hawkgirl.”

Mia rolled her eyes. “Don’t start with me. I am not involved with Carter.”

“I’m beginning to think the big guy is right, you two would be much better off if you fucked. Did you ever find out if he has a big dick?”

“I can hear you,” called Carter from across the room.
