“State your name. I may have more than one.”

I open the door and sneer, “Fuck off. Even if you had more than one brother, I’d still be your favorite.”

“Debatable.” Maddie places her book on her nightstand. She appears comfortable with a blanket pulled up to her waist and folded neatly. I’m certain someone tuckedher in, and if I had to bet, my money would be on Scar.

Crossing the room, I grab the handle of her wheelchair and roll it over to the side of her bed. “Scar been here to see you lately?”

“She and Riley were here for a couple hours last night. Haven’t you talked to her this morning?”

“Nah. She’s pissed at me.”

Maddie’s head tilts slightly to the side. “What’d you do, Neo?”

I bring my hands to my chest, grinning. “Why’s it always me?”

“Because you’re you. And because Scar doesn’t start shit, she ends it.”

“True,” I say in agreement before ratting myself out. “I gave her a big-ass hickey then told her something that hurt her pretty bad.”

“Wow. Okay. Those are two very different things. First of all, why the hell did you give her a hickey? Those things are gross.”

“To prove a point.”

“And the point is?”

“That she’s spoken for.”

“For the love of God, Neo. Stop being so damn possessive. You did that shit when we were kids. It’s disgusting.”

I chuckle. “What did I do when we were kids?”

“Like you don’t remember.”

“Humor me.”

“Remember that time we were at the park when we were, like, twelve or thirteen, and it started snowing and Scar had on short sleeves?”

“Doesn’t ring a bell.”

“Jagger offered her his coat, but you got pissed and said she should go get her own, knowing that we were miles away from home. So you threw his back at him. Ten minutes later, you gave her yours.”

“I’d hardly call that being possessive, Mads. It was a kind gesture.” I dust off my shoulder, smirking. “I happen to be a generous guy.”

“Bullshit. It was your way of having her wearyourjacket, without making it obvious you wanted her to. You’ve always done stuff like that.”

“You girls think too much into shit.”

“Just calling it like I see it. I always knew you two would end up together. I kept my mouth shut and let fate do its job.”

Looking back, there were some things I did that one might look at as me keeping Scar within arm’s reach. My father always taught me to keep your friends close and your enemies closer, so I excused it as that. Maybe I wanted to keep her away from Crew and Jagger because I figured, if I couldn’t have her, neither could they. Or maybe I didn’t want her with anyone at all.

“Speaking of fate,” Maddie cuts in, interrupting my moment of self-discovery. “Crew and I aren’t getting back together.”

I scoot up in the chair, gripping the arm rests. “You’re not?”

She shakes her head no. “Too much time has passed. Too much has changed.”

“If he said something that—”
