It didn’t mean we couldn’t behave in a patient/doctor manner. Right?

“If you don’t treat women who are Bridget’s friends, you’re going to lose a lot of business,” I advised.

He nodded. “Probably true. If you’re comfortable with me… with the visit, then we will proceed. The nurse will be in the room during the exam, but first we can go over your health, any questions or concerns you have. Do you still want me?”

I swallowed. Gosh, this was hell.

Of course I still wanted him.

Between my thighs.

Fu–dge! If there ever was abe careful what you wish forsituation, this was it.

THEO

I watched her squirm, then that pert little chin tipped up.

“It’s fine.”

“Good. This will be just like your last exam, so no surprises. Except me, I guess.”

She bit her lip and glanced at the tray with the supplies. “I, um… I’ve never had one of these exams before.”

I grabbed the laptop again, tucked it into my left forearm and scrolled through her records. “You’re twenty—”

“Four.”

I glanced at her date of birth–not that I doubted she knew her age–did some speed math. Her birthday was last month.

“You’ve been a patient of Dr. Robinson since…”

“All my life,” she finished for me again.

I looked up from the screen. It seemed odd that Dr. Robinson never performed a pelvic exam on her before. Twenty-four was pretty old for not having one. I wasn’t going to share that with Mallory though. I’d only talked to the doctor once on the phone and she seemed competent, which meant there was a reason.

“Okay.” I nodded and scanned the report again, but it was impossible to go through a lifetime of records right now. “Your vitals are good. Last menstrual period was ten days ago.”

I set the laptop back on the counter, dropped into the wheeled stool and leaned against the counter so there was as much space between us as possible. She had her ankles crossed and the paper gown tucked around her and below her knees. I’d seen her less covered over the summer. Then, I didn’t remember her wearing ridiculous socks with ducks on them. “Are you having any problems you’d like to talk about?”

She recrossed her ankles.

“I want to go on birth control. Dr. Robinson said when I was ready, she’d put me on it.”

My back went straight, and I narrowed my eyes. “Condoms are the safest option for contraception because it protects from sexually transmitted diseases that other methods don’t. However, being on another form, a backup method, is very important for women in case of user error or breakage.”

I couldn’t believe Dr. Robinson didn’t protect her female patients, or at least empower them, in their sexual health. And Mallory was smart.

“Is there a reason I didn’t see in your records” –I thumbed toward the laptop– “that prohibits you from being on it before now? Family history? Blood clots or cancer?”

She shook her head.

“You’ve been using condoms exclusively and consistently?”

She shook her head again.

I stood, set my hands on my hips. What the fuck? I knew she was a little wild. Fun, definitely. But reckless? “Mallory, you’re risking–”
