“Fuck it,” he says as he starts walking towards the building. I immediately walk with him.

The complete lack of street lights or outdoor lighting make concealing our approach easy. We both peer through a window on the side of the building, and it is pitch black inside the garage – not a person in sight.

“Alright,” I walk towards the back door and shoot the lock, “Fuck it.”

If anyone is here, they now know we are too. Luca uses his body to push through the door, and I am immediately on his heels. We are the only sounds echoing through this building. With my back against the wall, I flip the light switch. The halogen lights crackle and flicker as they begin to turn on, quickly showing us that this place truly is currently vacant.

“What the fuck,” Luca grumbles.

Pulling my phone from my pocket, I text Sal.Something isn’t right. This place is empty.

“Empty or not,” I start grabbing anything flammable and tossing it to the floor, “fucking torch it.”

As if I just unleashed a kid in a candy store, Luca is immediately grabbing for gas cans and tossing their contents along the walls. Luca leads a trail of gasoline towards the backdoor as I finish tossing papers to the floor.

Luca pulls a carton of cigarettes from his pocket and taps it on his hand before pulling one out and placing it to his lips. He tips the carton towards me and I decline, as he lights the one in his mouth. After taking a couple of long, hard drags he flicks it into the pool of gasoline by the door.

The cigarette ignites a blue flame that immediately follows the gas trail through the warehouse. Within minutes the flames are dancing along the walls. By the time we make our way back to the car, the entire building is engulfed in flames.

Pulling the phone back from my pocket, there is no response from Sal.It is done, I text him as we begin our drive back to the estate.

ChapterTwenty-Nine

Avalie

A loud bang startles me from my sleep. Rolling over, the clock on the nightstand reads two am.

Bang. Bang.

What the fuck was that?

It sounds like fireworks are going off in the yard. Sliding from the bed, I pull on my robe and head towards the window in an attempt to see what is going on. The glass is cool as I lean against it, seeing nothing but darkness.

I jump back from the window as two motorcycles ride from the tree line towards the house. Flashes of light come from them as I hear the sound of more fireworks.

Gunshots, Ava. Those are gunshots.

Running from the window, I cross the hall into Renzo’s room. Heading straight to his closet, I go to the dresser he showed me earlier today. He had assured me I would never need them because I was safe here, but still he showed me where he kept several more handguns. Pulling open the drawer, I grab for a pistol.

The next of gun shots is louder, so much louder.

They are in the house.

Quietly closing the closet door, I walk to the back of the closet. Bracing my back against the wall, I aim the gun towards the door. My hands tremble as I prepare to protect myself from whoever might be on the other side.

The chaos on the other side of the door is progressively getting louder. Closer. My heartbeat is thumping in my ears so loud it is almost drowning out all of the other noises echoing through this house.

My breathing stops as I watch the knob turn on the closet door. The door opens revealing a thin man, dressed in leather, wearing a motorcycle helmet. My hands are shaking as I fire off a shot, missing him completely. Firing again, it grazes his helmet, but does not phase him. Lowering the gun slightly, I fire it again. This one strikes him in the shoulder, twisting his body, but he keeps coming. I fire again and again, before his body drops to the floor at my feet. Blood is quickly pooling around him.

Run, Ava!

My brain is screaming at me to run, but my feet feel as though they are encased in concrete. After what feels like an eternity, I step over the body on the floor. My stomach turns, when I feel my bare foot step into the warm sticky puddle of blood.

Beginning to run, my wet foot slides on the wood floor almost causing me to fall. Retaining my balance, I sprint down the hallway before taking the stairs two at a time. Slipping into the library, I make my way to the garden. The grass is cool and wet under my feet, making it difficult to run.

I have no idea where I am going, but I just run. My only plan for right now is to get away from the men that have swarmed this house. I hear a commotion behind me, and without looking I know they have spotted me. I keep running towards the trees, my robe blowing behind me in the wind.

Any thoughts I have of outrunning these men quickly leaves me when I hear motorcycles rapidly closing the distance behind me. Turning as I run, I fire towards them, nearly certain I will not make contact with any of them.
