Okay. Screw him.

Although the way he said it kind of made sense.

He’s got me all messed up. He borrows books from widows and returns them. He almost seems human.

But killers aren’t human.

Then again, they hide well.

They hide behind normal.

But Lix Daxon is anything but normal.

Dammit! I need to find out the truth!

Chapter 6

I walk into the office.

“Hi,” Cassie says, withdrawing her long slender arms from an embrace with Brett. She rests her hand on his shoulder.

“Hello.” I greet her with a smile, offering Brett a nod.

Brett’s head gestures in return. He’s cooled down from our last conversation. He wouldn’t be too happy to know the little reporter is now following me. “Did you finish the plaster in the west wing of the Rolland’s?”

He’s all work. The only play he gets is from the woman standing beside him.

Cassie came into our lives over a year ago. She saved Brett from becoming a lonely, grumpy man. He may not be alone anymore, but I gotta say, the only time he’s not grumpy is when she’s around. But I’m glad he has her. And she him. They suit each other. Balance each other.

Brett was so caught up in saving our mother he forgot how to enjoy life. Cassie changed that. He’s still on his crusade to help Mom. We all are. It’s been our main goal for the past ten years. But having Cassie and Harper, my brother’s girlfriends, around has added some sort of happy normality to our fucked-up lives. I haven’t felt it since my brothers and I were in the same foster home nearly twenty years ago.

Mom’s been in jail since that time for killing our father. She’s serving twenty-five to life. It’s the culprit as to why we are so fucked up. Why we offer our services to abused women. Well, it’s why I do it, so I assume it’s the same for my brothers.

I don’t think about the dreadful night that changed my life forever. The night that tore our family apart and stole our happiness and my youth.

The only thing I remember from that night is standing in the living room. My mom’s comforting blue eyes glowing down on me. She grazed her gentle fingers along my cheek as she did every night when she tucked me into bed. She said everything was going to be alright. And as always, I believed her. Then I saw the gun in her shaking hand. She kissed me on the forehead and told me to go to bed. I did as I was told, turned around to leave, and heard the gunshot.

“Yeah.” I set the receipts from today’s supplies on the desk. “It’s all set for paint.”

Brett’s eyes follow me. “And the Luna Moon situation?”

“I’m handling it,” I say with no further explanation.

Cassie takes a step toward me, clasping her hands together. “How is the Manchester’s going? Is that almost ready for paint?”

“Not yet. It’ll be a few more weeks.” I chuckle, knowing she’s itching to get in the place. “But when it is, I’ll let you know.”

Brett’s eyes flick between Cassie and me. “Why?”

“I’m going to help Lix paint it.” Cassie beams.

I’ve never known someone who loves to paint so much. She says it relaxes her. Reading relaxes me. And whiskey. Needless to say, I’ve been hitting the books hard since meeting Chosen. The whiskey, that shit will have me reacting to what I feel for the woman. And I need to discover what the hell she’s really after before I react to anything.

Brett’s head whips to Cassie. “Are you sure that’s a good idea?”

“Ah.” Her brow arches and lips pinch. “Why wouldn’t it be?”

“You know”—his forehead creases—“with your day job and everything. You’re just so busy. I don’t want you to overdo it.”
